“Okay sure, I’ll do some purple. Maybe on the underneath.” Might as well. It sounded like fun, and she had never done anything spontaneous like this before.

Five minutes later they all piled into Cassie’s little car and headed into town. It was a quick drive, maybe ten minutes before they pulled up in front of a shop called “Beauty Products by Sally”.She should have known it wouldn’t be the beauty supply chain.

Kenzie was falling in love with this little town. They were quirky and fun, and it just made everything a little better. When they walked inside, they were greeted by a woman she figured was the shop owner.

She had beautiful mocha skin with light caramel eyes and long curly hair that was dyed a deep wine color with matching lipstick and sundress. She accentuated her look with thin gold bangles at her wrists, delicate star earrings, and gold strappy heels.

She was absolutely stunning.

“Hey there Sally! How are you doing?” asked Brianna.

“Hey darlin, I’m just peachy! What can I help you ladies with today?” She had a deep scratchy voice that made Kenzie think she smoked and a strong Mississippi accent.

Cassie started walking toward the back of the store while talking over her shoulder, “We’re having a girl’s night! We’re all going to dye our hair different colors!”

Sally motioned for them to follow Cassie, “Follow her. She knows where she’s going. You’re going to need bleach. Raven is the only one whose hair is light enough without it.”

Sally walked off in another direction and the rest of them followed Cassie.

Cassie and Raven started pointing out the best brands to choose from. Then they each started looking for the colors they wanted.

After looking at a few different brands, she finally found the color that would be perfect. It was a deep lavender. It reminded her of the stationery her mom liked to write on, and the walls in her bedroom that Rhiannon had painted.

Something to honor both women while also being fun. She turned to see what the others were doing. Cassie and Raven were huddled together with a bunch of bottles in front of them.

She didn’t want to interrupt so decided to join Sorcha and Brianna.

Brianna was helping Sorcha pick between two different blues. The one was a bright electric blue, and the other was a deep royal blue; both were very pretty and would look awesome with her auburn hair.

Sorcha turned to her, “Which one Kenzie? We can’t decide.”

“Oh, you want me to pick?” Both women nodded, and Sorcha held out the bottles. She took a closer look, then pointed at the royal blue. It would go better with her fair skin.

Sorcha smiled, “Thanks, that was my favorite too. But I kind of thought the brighter one would be more exciting so I couldn’t decide.”

Cassie spoke from behind them, making Kenzie jump a little in surprise, “If you’re not going to use the bright blue, Darren might like it. We should get that one too in case he wants to do it.”

Sorcha had started to put the extra bottle back but stopped when Cassie spoke, instead she handed it to Brianna. Then she asked, “What colors did ya’ll pick?”

Raven held several bottles, “I’m going to redo the pink and add pastel blue and purple. It’s going to look like cotton candy.”

Sorcha looked a little surprised, “You’re going to do your whole head? With all of them?”

Raven shrugged, “I’ll leave some blonde too. Just a bunch of small highlights of each. I’ve done it before. It’ll look pretty cool.”

“I can’t wait to see it!” Cassie did a little booty dance. Kenzie noticed she did that a lot whenever she was excited about something. She was enjoying learning all the interesting things about her new friends, each one totally unique in their own ways.

Cassie was a burst of energy and threw herself into things wholeheartedly. Raven was obviously outgoing and overflowing with confidence and experience. Brianna was a little more subtle than the two boisterous women, but she had a quiet confidence about her that Kenzie admired.

Sorcha on the other hand was very quiet and mostly stayed in the background, especially around other people. Kenzie noticed though, that she had started to talk up more around the girls. Like maybe she was getting used to them. She hoped this night would help her be more comfortable. She was also hoping that Darren might be able to help Sorcha with being around men, at least in a social setting.

She really liked all the women. It was a new experience for her to have friends though. She even chose a profession that was solo.

Looking at these amazing women though, she decided right there that it was time to join the world.

She was learning quickly that what she knew about the world was really very little. There was so much more to do and see, and she wanted to know everything. The world was so much bigger than she’d ever known.

It was about time she stopped just existing and started living again.
