"No, Ariel," she said softly. "It's not your appendix."

The doctor nodded and smiled patiently. "We ran some tests. You’re pregnant."

My eyes widened in shock, and I shook my head. "How, I mean... this can't be right."

The doctor stepped closer. "We double-checked."

"But I can't be pregnant!" I protested again, feeling tears well up in my eyes. "I'm not ready for this! And why am I in so much pain?"

"I'm sorry, Ariel," Marcie said. "You have an ectopic pregnancy..."

"And we will have to do a procedure to remove it. You already have a serious infection." The doctor's voice was gentle but firm.

Then Marcie echoed what he said. "It's very serious, Ariel. Without treatment, you could hemorrhage…."

I covered my face and sobbed. "Marcie, how do I tell Guy? Or do I tell him anything...."

Chapter Eighteen

Guy

Daniel set a bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag on the counter and started rummaging through the sacks from our favorite cafe. "Who got bacon and eggs with whole wheat pancakes?"

"That's mine," Ryder said. "Got any Ketchup?"

Chase stood behind the kitchen island. Scooting the last bag toward him, he looked inside. "Guy, did you get a waffle?"

"No, I got an omelet." I spoke up.

Chase dug deeper, "There's no omelet here, only a waffle... No, two waffles, a bowl of oatmeal, and a breakfast burrito."

"Shit... it's just not my day. That's not what I ordered." I shook my head.

"I sure as hell don't want any oatmeal." Chase snorted and decided, "I'll take the two waffles."

"At least they sent brown sugar and some raisins with the oatmeal. Goes great with a breakfast burrito." I dumped the sugar and raisins into the bowl and pulled up a stool.

"So, what's the plan?" Daniel asked Ryder. "You're the one with the most experience... as a hacker."

"Yes, sir. And proud of it." Laughing, Ryder dug into his pocket and pulled out a jump drive. "Guy, we will need you to load this on your computer. It's the most secure. Daniel and Chase, you two are on standby."

I nodded. "I hope the VPN works." I glanced over at Chase.

"I have no doubts at all," Chase chimed in, pouring another container of syrup on his waffles.

"I did some research and found the web-based program ABC Security uses to access their system," Ryder told us. "Now, we have to get past their authentication process… and that won't be easy.”

Daniel pointed with his fork at the bottle sitting on the counter. "The person who can hack through authentication gets the first drink of the Jim Beam..." Then he pointed at me. "You best have an idea of how to work the Nespresso machine. The whiskey will go great with some stiff espresso."

I nodded and opened a drawer filled with a variety of coffee capsules. "No drinking until we're through, though. We don't what to fuck this up."

"Spoilsport." Ryder shook his head as he started collecting our trash.

Chase grabbed his paper plate. "Hold on. I got one more waffle to go!"

A few minutes later, we were seated in my office. I flipped a switch, and the thick blinds lowered over the windows. Next, I hit a button, and a wide screen inched down in the front of the room. Chase looked up, "Projector and all. We'll never get you back to the office."

"Don't bet on that. It's boring as hell out here."
