His eyes looked over me kindly. "I suspect the medications you were taking may have had an effect. But there is no way to know for sure. It's just one of Mother Nature's little surprises."

"How is my baby? Is everything okay so far?"

Dr. Rodriguez nodded and smiled. "We'll have to monitor you for the next few days, but we're all hoping for a happy outcome."

"Can I see my baby on an ultrasound?"

"No, Meagan, I'm sorry, not yet. You're not far enough along. I know you're worried about the baby, but I'm concerned about both of you. I have a list of the medications you were taking and —"

"Has the baby been affected?" I tried to sit up, but my body was too weak. "Why am I feeling so shaky?"

"It's the panic attack, Meagan. Your body is exhausted from all the stress and emotion." He patted my arm. "Let's take things one step at a time."

I sighed and nodded before resting my head against the pillow. Then I closed my eyes and listened while Dr. Rodriguez listed some of the tests they would run. I was so scared, but the only thing that mattered right now was keeping my baby safe. "I wanted to talk to Chase. I need him. I tried to call, but it didn't go through. Did he block me? Maybe he blocked my number?" I muttered to the doctor.

He raised his eyebrows, surprised. "Is this man the baby's father?"

"Yes!" I started to sniffle.

The doctor picked up his phone and texted someone. "I've ordered you a sedative that is safe for you to take. It will help with the withdrawal from the medications." He patted my hand. "We'll talk further in the morning. You need your rest. I'll have the social worker come in for a visit as soon as she is available."

"Thank you," I whispered.

I watched him go, and as soon as the door closed, I took off my mask and sat up. "I need my phone. Where's my phone!" I asked myself, glancing around the hospital room. Then, just as I was about to get out of bed to search, the nurse came in and gasped.

"What are you doing? It would be best if you stayed in bed. The doctor said you needed your rest."

I pointed at the dresser. "Is my phone over there? I need to call Chase."

The nurse shook her head and handed me a tissue as I started to cry again. "It's okay, Meagan. Don't worry. I'm sure he already knows."

"What do you mean?" I asked, wiping away my tears.

The nurse smiled. "I'm sure the rehab center called your relatives."

"Which relatives? I'm talking about the father of my child," I said as she helped me lay back down and smoothed my sheets.

"I'm sure they called him, too. So, you don't have to worry. Everything will be alright."

"Can I go pee!" I asked, determined to find an excuse to search for my phone.

"Of course, let me get your bedpan. It's right over here," she said, producing one from the cabinet.

"I'd like to use the restroom if it's okay. And while I'm up, I need to grab my phone. Do you know where it is?"

She held up her hand and explained how I needed to stay in bed since I was weak. "You don't want to fall and take a chance on hurting your baby, do you?"

I nodded but knew she was playing on my emotions to get me to comply. So, I played like I gave in and said, "I understand. Hand me the bedpan, then. But what about my phone?"

"Sweetie, none of your personal effects have been sent from the rehab center. They will probably arrive in a day or two. Are you comfortable?"

"As comfortable as one can be sitting on a cold stainless-steel bedpan," I snapped.

She gave me a sideways smile. "I'll be back in a few minutes to start your IV and get your sedative hooked up."

I leaned back on the pillow, and my hand touched something hard. It was the bed control and the phone all in one. I smiled inside the plastic mask, then moved it over my head. Picking up the device, I pressed 0 for the operator and asked if she would call Rosedale Technologies. I heard her placing the call before she said, "I'm sorry, ma'am, their lines are down!"

When the nurse stepped in, and I was clutching the phone to my chest, she told me, "Meagan, you need to keep the mask over your face! Think about your baby!" I clicked my tongue. God! That woman knew how to manipulate me. She could put Guy to shame.
