“Shut up!”

“You can’t get out of this.”

“We should have stayed in the car,” the driver said. “Tried to drive out.”

“They would have caught us, you idiot.”

Her eyes found Nash, and she recognized two of the ranch hands holding rifles. Ford’s mother was there too. So many people were here to rescue her.

“Just let me go. Please. You said your son goes on playdates. He doesn’t want to lose his father at his age. You’ll never watch him grow up. Never see who he marries. You’ll never play with your grandchildren.”

“Shut up!”

“Think about what you’ll be leaving if you don’t stop this. Your wife will have to raise your son alone.”

“Put down your weapons!” Chief Blake called.

“We can’t get out of this, Andre,” the man holding her said. “Put your gun down.”

Andre didn’t put down his gun; instead, he grabbed her arm and jerked her away from the other man, dragging her back to the car. His partner dropped to the ground and put his hands in the air.

“I’m not going back inside!”

“You should have thought of that before,” Autumn said.

“Shut up!”

He started waving his gun from side to side, pointing at the barricade and people as they reached the car.Now or never. She forced herself backward and rammed him into the SUV. He grunted.

She wrestled free and ran.

A shot rang out and then more, but she didn’t stop. Ford was running to her, and she leaped at him. He caught her and turned, running back the way he’d come. Only when he was behind Joe, Dylan, and Fin did he stop.

“Ford,” she whispered into his neck.

“I have you now.” He surrounded her, his arms holding her in a fierce grip. “You scared me.” He was shaking like her.

“Thank you for rescuing me.”

“I had help.” He eased back and lowered her to the ground, then untied her hands with shaking fingers.

When she was free, Autumn wrapped her arms around his neck and held on. “I was so scared they’d shoot you.”

“Ditto when you did that move and ran him back into the car.” His face was in her hair. “You scared seven years off my life.”

“It’s done,” she heard Joe say. “You okay there, Autumn? Nice move by the way.”

She let Ford go but gripped his hand. “It’s over?”

“It is. The guy who gave himself up is being cuffed.”

“The other one?” Autumn asked, her eyes going to where she’d left him. He was lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

“He didn’t make it, I’m afraid,” Joe said solemnly.

“Thanks, Joe.” Ford said. “For everything.”

“We look after our own here, bud.” Joe leaned in to kiss Autumn’s cheek. “Glad you’re okay.”
