“The same – or slightly different?” Eric smiled knowingly, and watched Max’s face before his warm eyes flickered to hers. Madison smoothed Max’s hair and heard his gasp on understanding.

“It’s different but it’s a lot.”

“And you are my precious treasure, my oldest boy,” Eric said openly. “I love you so much, but it’s different from Beckett. You both have huge pieces of my heart, and will always be special to me.”

“That makes sense,” Max nodded, and went back to looking at the baby as Madison met Eric’s eyes.

“I love you – and you are the best Daddy in the world,” she breathed reverently, smiling at him.

“Because I have the best family,” Eric said tenderly, leaning over to kiss her. “It makes it really easy to give you my all, because I can’t imagine a world without any of you.”

As Madison moved to kiss him again, she heard a small grunt, followed by a shocked laugh as Max suddenly set the baby down into his lap almost frantically, as Eric helped guide his hands.

“You have to hold him no matter what, Max. Remember, Beckett’s a little weak thing, and not strong like you.”

“Daddy… I think Beckett is going potty… Oh wait! Iknowhe’s going potty because I can smell it,” Max announced in alarm, causing Madison to laugh softly.

“Why doesn’t someone hand me a diaper and I’ll change it – while you and your Daddy go get some juice in the café?”

“Have you eaten lunch, M&M? Do you need a few minutes sweetheart?” Eric asked tenderly, scooping up the baby from Max and putting their son in the bassinet. She was grateful because it would give her a chance to get up for a moment, run to the restroom and clean up, before climbing back into the bed.

“I haven’t eaten yet – and yes, I could use a moment.”

“How about I get us all a little something, and we can have a picnic in the hospital room until you get to come home tonight. We’ll probably take a stroll to look at the nursery so you can take your time. I can get a nurse if you need one to help you,” Eric offered, as Max clapped his hands and looked at her.

“Mama, can we picnic?”

“I would love a picnic – and yes, Eric. I’m still a little sore.”

Eric leaned down to kiss her tenderly, whispering to her.

“I’ve always got your back, my love. Ask and I’m here for you.”

“Just love me forever,” she replied, touching his cheek as their eyes met – only to have him jostled as Max tugged on Eric’s hand in excitement.

“C’mon Daddy. I’m hungry and we’re gonna picnic.”

“Picnic, remember?” she smiled knowingly at him.

“Yup. Picnic first, and then bringing you all home with me.”

“Let’s go, Daddy…” Max urged.

“I’ll be here,” she chuckled easily as he winked at her, standing up and stretching out his hand to Max.

“Let’s make this the best picnic ever to celebrate our family, eh, Max?”

“Yeah, Daddy, let’s go!”

Madison watched the two of them walk out of her hospital room and sighed with contentment, exhaustion, and unparalleled love for her family. Life had certainly been full of happiness since that first email – and she never looked back.

“It was just a letter,” she smiled softly to herself, recognizing the miracle she had been given.
