“You’re right,” Colton says, finally. “You will be an incredible nanny to my son.”I blink, feeling slightly confused.

Did he just…offer me the job, or…

What just happened?

“So does that mean you’re…”

I pause, not wanting to ‘accept’ a job I haven’t been offered, because technically he hasn’t offered it to me. I don’t think.

“Offering you the job,” he says. “Trust me, I’m just as surprised as you are.”

At that, I actually laugh. Not only because I find it funny, but also because the relief that has suddenly rushed through my veins has flooded me with all the positive and happy endorphins.

I don’t even allow myself to sit and think about the fact that I’ll have to see Colton Palmer every day because I get to stay in Sandalwood! I don’t have to continue to impose on Leighton and Leo or pinch every damn penny or clear tables at a bar anymore.

“I’m assuming that means you’ll be accepting it?”

The sternness in his voice makes me laugh again, but I quickly try to choke it back, tone it down. I don’t want him to think he hired a lunatic. Especially not before I sign paperwork and move in.

“Yes. Yes, definitely, I’ll be accepting, Mr. Palmer. Thank you.”

He nods, and we both sit there in silence, the only sound the ticking of a clock somewhere in the house.

“So…when would you like me to start?” I ask, realizing I’ll probably need to direct this conversation.

Usually, Jorrine handles this kind of stuff, and I know she’ll be the one to send over a final contract with pay and hours and blah blah blah. But I feel like if I don’t hammer out some of these details now, I’ll leave here and Colton will magically forget he offered me a job.

I can’t let that happen.

Colton licks his lips and glances around then eyes his watch.

“Well, it’s Thursday evening,” he says, shrugging a shoulder. “How about Monday?”

I nod. “Sounds great. I’ll need to give notice at the bar, which could be two weeks, but there’s always a possibility Soren will release me from that early,” I tell him. “Is that okay with you? That I still have a few shifts that overlap with working for you?”

He shrugs his shoulders again, and it strikes me in that moment just how broad they are. I blink that thought away when he speaks.

“That shouldn’t be an issue. As long as you aren’t bringing anything from that job to this one.”

I shake my head. “Absolutely not.”

He nods.

“Um…Jorrine Wright will send over a contract to you. It’s a standard nanny contract that outlines hours, expectations, pay, accommodations, etc. You’ll be able to dictate what you want and negotiate with Jorrine.”

Colton bobs his head again but remains mute.

“And then, when would you like me to move in?” I ask. “Does this weekend work, or do you want me to bring my things on Monday when I start…”

My words fade away when I see Colton’s brows furrow in confusion. He blinks a few times, licks his lips.

“Move in,” he says, his words sounding like a statement, but in reality, they’re a question.

“It’s a…live-in nanny position that I was looking for. That’s what my position was with the Keifers and what was indicated in my file.”

He lets out a long sigh.

“I’m gonna be honest, I…didn’t know that.” He lets out an awkward noise that sounds like a chuckle but definitely doesn’t look like one because not even a hint of a smile crosses his face.
