“Alex…”

“I love you, Bex. And I never want you to feel like you’ve had to give up everything for me, but I know that your life will change even more when–”

“That’swhy you haven’t asked me yet?”

“What do you meanyet?”

“Alex, I’ve been waiting for you to ask me since after I moved to London. I couldn’t askyoubecause you’re a Princess.”

“You would have asked me?”

“I have your ring in my sock drawer. You don’t have to wear it, but I wanted you to have one,” Bexley replied.

“Wait. What? You have a ring for me?”

“Yes. Your mother helped me pick it out for you last year.”

“Mymotherhelped you pick out an engagement ring for me?”

Bexley laughed and said, “I don’t know why you’re so surprised – she’s wanted you to get married forever.”

“This isnothow this was supposed to happen,” Alex said, shaking her head.

“What are you talking about?”

“Bexley, we’re talking about rings, and we’re on the plane. I’m supposed to be on my knees, asking you to spend the rest of your life with me because you’re the only one I want to spend mine with. There should be candles and soft music. I wanted to ask you to dance.”

Bexley smiled wide and said, “I’d like all that when we get home, but if you’re on your knees, you don’t have to ask me anything.” She leaned over and whispered, “You can just take what you want.”

“Bex!” Alex blushed.

Bexley laughed and said, “Okay. I’m sorry.”

“Just…” Alex stood up. “Can you give me a minute?”

“Alex, what–”

Bexley watched as Alex walked down the short aisle of the private plane, disappearing into the galley, and she started breathing hard. Her heart was racing. She’d done something wrong. Alex was trying to be romantic as they talked about getting engaged, and Bexley was making jokes.

“What the hell is wrong with me?” she muttered to herself.

She closed her eyes tightly, trying to hold back tears because she might have just messed up one of the most important moments in her life.

“Bex?” Alex asked softly.

Bexley opened her eyes and saw Alex standing there, holding something.

“I asked the pastry chef at the palace to make this for you when we were in Kleinland,” Alex told her. “I was going to give it to you when we got home. I remember how much you loved her desserts.” Alex placed a plate with a slice of cheesecake with strawberries swirled inside and a single fresh one on top.

“You went to get me cheesecake?” Bexley asked.

“I love you,” Alex said, kneeling on the floor of the plane. “And I’ve been worried that when we get engaged, you’d have to make more changes you might not want to make.”

“Babe, I’m not worried. I will still have my work. It’s just going to look a little different.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

“I get you,” Bexley said simply. “And I get to help people on a grander scale. Yes, I’m okay with that.”
