“Well, they go through them fast,” Alex reasoned, pulling out a blue-and-white onesie. “This one looks good to me.”

“Hey there, that’s better, isn’t it?” Bexley asked Julia as she buttoned her onesie back up. “Nice and clean and, hopefully, happy.”

When Alex arrived back at the table to take care of Tor, Bexley picked up Julia and bounced her a bit as she watched Alex clean Tor up.

“So, you’d describe yourself assemi-butch?” Bexley asked.

“Well, I’m no femme,” Alex replied. “My mother can convince me to slip into a dress for events every now and then, but I prefer pants when I can get away with it. I like to open the door for ladies. I try to pull out chairs if they let me. And yes, I suppose I would like my future wife to have our babies because while I want them, I don’t particularly want to carry them myself.” She finished up with Tor, lifting him into the air, and asked, “Hey, do you think we could keep the baby diarrhea to a minimum while your Aunt Bex and I are taking care of you? Feel free to fill that nappy up all you want when your mums return.”

Bexley laughed at how Tor looked down at Alex and said, “He looks like he’s concentrating really hard.”

“Yes. That can’t be good,” Alex replied, laughing a little. “I think he’s about to go again. So, I’ll just put you down in your crib until you’re done, buddy.” She placed the boy in his crib, which had his name above it in the same dark-green paint on the accent wall as did Julia’s.

“She’s quieted down,” Bexley pointed out.

“She likes you,” Alex said, walking over to them and rubbing little Julia’s back while she stood just a few inches from Bexley.

If anyone had walked in the room right now, it would’ve looked like Alex and Bexley were holding their daughter between them, and there was something about that that made Bexley smile a little. She’d have to unpackthatlater.

“I can tag in if you need to go,” Alex offered, still rubbing Julia’s back as the baby pressed her face to Bexley’s neck. “Iwaslate, after all.”

“I think she’s going to fall back asleep,” Bexley said.

“Why don’t you take her to your room and lie down with her until Tor does his business? He’ll probably go back to sleep right after. I can then come and get her and bring her here.”

“I’m okay,” Bexley replied, sitting in the rocking chair. “I was just reading an article anyway.”

“About what?” Alex asked, sitting on the sofa.

“Just work stuff. It’s boring.”

“Tell me. I want to know.”

“The article is calledDiagnostic Criteria of Developmental Apraxia of Speech Used by Clinical Speech-Language Pathologists,” Bexley replied.

“Got it,” Alex said with wide eyes.

“Doyouhave any thoughts on that?” Bexley teased.

“Yes, that was a lot of big words you just said.”

Bexley laughed a little, and Julia cooed, so Bexley started rocking in the chair.

“You’re going to be a great mum,” Alex told her.

“How do you know that?”

“Because you’re made for it. You look so in your element right now,” Alex replied.

“Well, I’m not getting any younger, so it needs to happen soon.”

“Have you ever thought of having one on your own?”

“No, I know I want a wife to do this with me,” Bexley said.

“Yeah, me too,” Alex replied, smiling over at her. Then, she cleared her throat, stood, and walked over to Tor. “I think he’s done. He isn’t concentrating as hard, and…” She bent down. “Yeah, he’s ready.”

Bexley laughed as Alex moved him back to the table to change him again.
