“It’s not one outfit. It’s more of a feeling.”
“How does that work?”
“I never get to dress how I want in public, do I? I’m either in military dress or wearing an actual dress. And, on the rare occasion I can get away with wearing pants, I can’t just dress like a lesbian, as my mother would say.”
“Youdidlook like a lesbian last night.” Alice smiled at her.
“Yes, that’s what I was going for.” Alex sighed. “I had a whole dinner planned, Alice.”
“Why didn’t Bexley tell me? I would’ve understood. I’ve been trying to get you two together forever, Alex.”
“She didn’t say anything?” Alex asked.
“Not a word about a date. I asked her why you were at her door, and she just said you two were going to grab dinner downstairs.”
“Oh,” Alex said, disappointed.
“Alex, howexactlydid you ask Bexley out?”
“I asked her to dinner.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“Did you use the worddate?”
“No, it was implied.”
“Implied? Alex, you don’t justimplyyou want a date with someone. Youask them outon a date,” Alice told her.
“I asked her to have dinner with me. I told her I’d make arrangements,” Alex replied.
“Have you ever actually had to ask a woman out?” Alice asked then.
“Of course,” she said.
“Really?”
“Well…” Alex tried to remember an example.
“Alex,haveyou ever asked a woman out before?”
“I don’t know, actually,” she replied. “I’ve had girlfriends, and I’ve been on dates, obviously, but…”
“They were set up by your mother or by someone else?”
“Most of the time, yes. At university, I fell into something, but I don’t recall having to ask her out on a date.”
“I think youthoughtyou asked Bexley out, but I’m not sure Bexley understood that that was what you were doing.”
Alex leaned back against the sofa and said, “Well, fuck.”
Alice patted her on the knee and said, “Just ask her out again. And this time, make sure to use the worddate.”
“Do you know how much courage it took me to finally ask her out the first time?” Alex asked.
“Alex, you like her. Just tell her that.”
