“Okay. We’ve talked about this, baby girl. You’ll grow one of these, too, one day, but this one is mine.”

“Hey,” Alice whispered.

Alex turned to see the woman standing just off to the side before walking over to her.

“Hey,” she replied.

“You’re back?”

“Just,” she said.

“Doessheknow?” Alice asked.

“Not yet.”

“But you were just staring at her?”

Alex nodded.

“Nora’s at work late. I’m about to put the kids to bed with Bex. Do you want to join us?”

Alex shook her head and said, “Not tonight. I’m tired. I was just coming to find you to let you know I’m back, but I’m going to get some sleep, okay?”

“She’s going to want to come talk to you.”

“I’ll see her tomorrow. Can you not tell her I’m here just yet?”

“Alex, this is dumb. Just talk to her.”

“I did. I told her how I felt. And I’m back to talk more, but seeing her just now, with them, looking…” Alex closed her eyes for a second before opening them again. “She’s who I want, Alice.”

“I know that,” Alice replied. “Just… Whenever you do finally get this whole thing figured, remember strawberries.”

“What?”

“Bexley loves them.” Alice winked at her.

CHAPTER 26

Bexley stayed up late, working on the plan for the following week. Each patient was unique, so they needed unique treatment plans. Now that this stage of the program included patient work, she was even busier than before.

She’d also met with the Prime Minister and his daughter, who was very nice but also clearly not interested in Bexley in the slightest. The woman had invited Bexley for a drink, though, and they’d gone to a pub in the city, spending some time laughing about her father’s attempts to find her a girlfriend. While it had been fun, neither of them was interested in anything more. In fact, Bexley had done what she did best when out with a friend at a bar: she’d played wingwoman. When Suze had noticed a woman she found attractive sitting at the end of the bar, having a beer, Bexley had gone over to her and asked if she’d be interested in Suze buying her a drink. The next day, Bexley had gotten a text message from Suze saying that she’d woken up at her newfriend’shouse and had an amazing night. There had also been many emojis at the end of that message.

This morning, on the way into the office, Bexley stopped for a cup of coffee at her new favorite café down the street and grabbed some pastries for the students and patients who would be in that day. When she got to the door of the building, though, she noticed something.

“Dr.Woods,” a man said.

“Albert,” she replied.

“Her Royal Highness is upstairs,” he informed her.

“I guessed that since you and your other well-dressed friends are outside my door,” she said, smiling at the guard. “Would you like a pastry?” She held up the bag.

“No, thank you, Ma’am.”

“If you change your mind, they’ll be upstairs.”

Bexley tried to appear casual, but as she took the elevator up to her floor, her heart started racing. Alex was back. And the woman wasn’tjustback; she washere. She was already inside Bexley’s office. Alex hadn’t waited for Bexley that morning. She’d beaten her here.
