He threw his head back with a laugh, surprising both of them. “Dragons are very real.”

“I did not know that,” she replied. “But in a world where shifters exist, I guess dragons just make sense.”

“It’s easy for shifters to live on these great big properties. It makes it easy to shift and fly around. For wolves, we need less space, but that doesn’t stop us from missing the dense woods of our ancestors every now and again.”

“I guess not. Does that mean I’ll meet your wolf while we’re here?”

He stilled, and Amelia was scared she’d said something terribly rude. “Sorry,” she rushed out. “I’ve seen the lions shift a bunch of times. I didn’t mean to insult you.”

Wilder slowly shook his head. “You didn’t insult me. I just didn’t think you would be willing to meet my wolf.”

Her mouth pulled into a frown. “Why not?”

He considered this for a few moments. “I don’t know. Maybe you’d find it scary.”

She shook her head. “I can’t think of anything you would do that would scare me.”

Wilder puffed out his chest and grinned at her. “NowthatI like hearing.” He led her out of the car and toward the enormous castle doors without another word. Amelia had the definite sense she’d said something. Something important that changed things more than their night together.

If only she knew what it was.

NINETEEN

WILDER

Wilder groaned when he looked down at his phone. The incoming call was coming from the one person he didn’t want to talk to just then.

“Bad news?” Amelia asked from across the room.

The stained-glass windows of the library cast pretty shadows on her hair and features. She belonged in this place. She belonged wherever he was. But explaining that to his mother was going to be impossible.

“Not exactly,” he finally responded to Amelia.

“Don’t screen the call on my account. I wanna see what’s up there.” She pointed to the narrow stone steps that led to the library’s second floor. She waved him on before running up the stairs.

“Yes?” he answered.

“Is that really how you’re going to speak to your mother, Wilder Wolverton?”

He winced. “No. Of course not. Hello. How are you?”

“Well, now,” she gasped. “Don’t bethatcivil, or I will assume that something is definitely wrong with you.”

“There is no winning with you,” he grumbled.

“Of course not. I’m a wolf matriarch with four of the most ungrateful children in the world,” she chided.

“Ungrateful, huh?”

“Oh, fine. You’re all just fine. I simply wish your father and I would see more of you and your siblings.”

“Seeing as how I am an ocean away running the family business, maybe you should be pestering the others to visit you.”

“Well, I have weekly dinners with them. You, on the other hand, I haven’t seen in months. You’re going to come for your sister’s child if I have to drag you here by the ear.”

There was no doubt in his mind his mother would make good on the threat. “Like I told you, things are really busy here. I might not be able to get away for some time.”

“Oh? But you have time to fly off to the castle in the Alps? With alady friend?”
