He chuckled and placed his arms on her waist. “Well, notallthe time.”

“That’s what I thought. Be nice to your mom.”

“I will.”

“Go visit her. Youshouldbe there when Rylee gives birth. It’s a big moment for the pack.”

He tensed. “I don’t want to leave you alone.”

She rolled her eyes. “You’re being something. Not quite a dick, but definitely difficult. I wouldn’t be alone. You’d leave me with your staff, wouldn’t you? You trust your employees.”

“Of course, I trust my employees. But—” He gulped audibly and stepped closer to her. “You mean more to me than a job, Amelia. I don’t think I can let you out of my sight until all of this is resolved.”

“I knew sleeping with you was going to be a mistake,” she teased. His face fell, and she was keenly aware she’d said the wrong thing. “Not a mistake. A complication. Not one I regret either,” she added, cupping his face in her hands. “You’re a good man, Wilder Wolverton. And I would love if more people saw that side of you. It’s my plan to go back home to the US, anyway. Maybe when you go over for your sister’s baby, you can take me with you. Transfer me over to the New York office.”

Again, she had said the wrong thing. She didn’t know what, but she could feel Wilder harden.

“I don’t know when it’ll be safe for you to travel internationally.”

“Hmm, Wilder? You’ve flown me to Francetwicein the last week. It’s safe to say I’ve already traveled internationally.”

He cleared his throat. “Right. Well, still. I’m the security expert. What I say goes.”

“If you say so,” she conceded. This was about more than a trip to his family. She was sure of it. “How about we change the topic? Let’s go in the woods.”

“I haven’t shown you around at all.”

“That’s fine,” she assured him. “When was the last time you shifted? I bet you need a good run.”

Wilder softened. “You might be right. It could help me.”

“And I’ll get to meet your wolf.”

The prospect made her giggle, and she ran out of the library, not really knowing where she was going.

The castle was impressive.Amelia wasn’t a stranger to big and stately homes, but there was something about the ancient castle. It had been around for so long, she was sure a king or queen had lived there.

But as beautiful as the stone walls were, the forest was incomparable.

The trees were thick and tall, bushy and healthy. This was an old forest mostly untouched by men. It smelled different. Cleaner. All the fresh air made her a little bit dizzy.

“I can’t believe your family owns this. It’s insane. I would never leave,” she said.

“I like it, but I would have a hard time managing the entire BMA corporation from this castle. The internet connection is spotty at best, and the only reason why I have service out here is my phone. It’s essentially a satellite phone I can take anywhere in the world.”

“So what I’m hearing is that I am definitely secluded here. At your mercy.”

“There you go. Saying that again.”

“Well, it’s true. If you want to make wolf food out of me, you could.”

He chuckled. “Wolf food.”

Her eyes sparked. “So? Go on. Show me!”

“What, now?”
