“Hmm…” I pecked her lips. “You’ll need a full stomach to deal with that. Sit. Eat.” I fixed her shirt and tapped her ass. “I’m hungry too, and I better eat this before I tear into you.”

“Hmmm...” Sitting back behind her desk, she licked her lips. Her next bites were slow, and captivating.

I pointed to the frames on the wall. Trying to find something else to focus on. “You’re legit, huh.” I teased, “Should I stop at the desk and make my next appointment?”

“You should.”

“I’ll do that.” As I finished the tamales and started on a taco, I said, “This will hold me over through the season. It’ll make it hard not to want it though.” I eyed her. “When camp starts it’ll be all green everything for me.”

She frowned. “Oh, you like that?”

I shook my head. “Not at all.”

“And training camp is soon, right?”

“A few days.”

Her eyes dropped to her food. The room felt heavy after that. Like there was a crowd of people in there with us sucking up the air. Neither of us used the limited breath to state the obvious—things would change.

Until then, I wanted as much of her as I could get. “Busy after work?”

She closed the container and said, “Sadly, no.”

“We can do whatever you like.”

“Whatever?”

I repeated, “Whatever.” I hopedwhateverwas me. If I had the same offer presented, that’s what I’d want.Her.

“Dinner at home.” She beamed. “I’ll cook.”

I laughed. “Not what I expected. But yeah.” Then I pulled my lips to the side and tilted my head back. “Can you cook?” I grabbed the bag. “Or should I bring backup?”

She laughed. “I can do a little something.”

“Bet, I’ll be at your house. What time?” I stood from the chair and watched her walk to the door.

“Six?”

I nodded and followed her to the front desk before wrapping a hand around her waist and pulling her to me. “Hey, we should give them something to talk about?”

She touched my arm and turned. “Like?”

I waited till we were near the front desk and whispered, “This,” in her ear before grabbing her face. The kiss wasn’t like the one in her office, but it was enough to ensure the rumors were worth it.

“Make sure you make that appointment.” She tapped my chest before leaving me with the receptionist.

ChapterThirteen

Gianna

Months before the wedding I was a hot mess. The only thing I wanted to do when I got home was sit on the couch. Cooking dinner was out of the question. Some nights, I didn’t even care if I ate. I’d pull frozen fruit from the freezer, make a smoothie, and call it a night. I was dieting to make sure I fit into my dress, so it felt appropriate that I wasn’t cooking comfort meals.

But I loved cooking. Despite finding it difficult to make anything Shawn enjoyed. Either he hated Mexican food, which I loved to cook, or didn’t want the soul food recipes my mama gave me. He wanted steak and potatoes, or lobster and pasta. Nothing I made, ever. So when I tried, it was a fail of epic proportions.

At some point we started eating separately, and I should have known then things weren’t going well. We were at the beginning of the end months before it all came crumbling down.

Walking into the kitchen, I tried to think of something, anything that was going right with the two of us. I was having a hard time finding something. It wasn’t that I didn’t love him. Because I did. With all my heart. So much I was willing to overlook the little things that bothered me. The things others warned were red flags.
