“Do you have a name?”

“Ava, I am you. You are me.” If wolves could roll their eyes, she would be.

“I get it, but when I talk to you, it would be easier for me to talk to you as if you are someone else.”

“Okay, pick a name.” She shrugs her wolfy shoulders.

“How about cinnamon?” I ask, thinking of my wolves.

“I like it,” Cinnamon says.

“Cool. I feel better already,” I sigh.

“You still have doubts?” Cinnamon is reading my mind again.

“What if I’m a shit wolf?”

“Do you think I would be a shit wolf?” Cinnamon sounds offended.

“No, I don’t think that.” My head hurts bad.

“You are beautiful. We are going to be amazing.”

“I am,” I boast. “I love how my fur feels,” I say dreamily.

“It’s beautiful. You are a beautiful wolf.”

“Yes, yes I am,” I say, my eyes heavy. “I want to go for a run and test my legs.”

You will. You will run with your mates.

“Thanks, Cinnamon. See you soon,” I say to myself.

I am being burned alive. My skin is hot and itchy. I hear words floating around me but can’t open my eyes. I don’t feel Kerian’s cuffs. River’s shirt is gone, but I am covered in a thin blanket. I feel suffocated by it.

“Don’t worry,” Kerian’s voice urges.

“It’s been two days,” River says. The fear in his voice hurts me.

“She will get through it,” Kerian says roughly. He’s trying to be strong for us, but I feel his anxiety.

I feel them. I feel their emotions like they are my own. Cinnamon is there too. I see her in my head, staring at me intently.

“Cupcake, you have to push past the fear,” River says desperately. The bed at my side presses down. He lays beside me, stroking my face. I turn my head into his palm. “Cupcake?”

I can’t answer him as much as I try.

“Darlin’, we’re here. We will always be here,” Kerian says. He lies on my other side, wrapping his hand around my wrist.

I want to shout that I’m okay. My heart aches for them. I know now that I will be alright. This is my journey. My wolf smiles at me. I will be with them soon.

***

Distant shouting makes me stir. I pry open my eyes. I am still in bed, but Kerian’s bed. I’m wearing a tank top. It’s huge on me, and I smell Kerian. Holy shit. I can smell them. River smells like a campfire, wild and bright. Kerian smells like wood and spice.

River is in a panic. Kerian is trying to remain calm. They are arguing, but they aren’t alone. Harmony is here with her mates, along with Serenity and Ryker.
