The large plate held enough food to feed us both. Using the button on the side of the bed, I lifted the television and made myself comfortable. Milo flipped through channels while gnawing on a piece of bacon, in search of football highlights.

“Happy birthday, Nature.”

Leaning over, never taking his eyes off the television, he kissed my cheek.

“How many times will you tell me?”

“As many times as it crosses my mind.”

“Okay, because we’re on like number five since midnight.”

“Umm hmmm. Your point?”

“Nothing, baby.”

“Alright. Now, do me a favor and reach behind your pillow for me. Grab that box for me.”

“And the games begin.” I chuckled.

“They have indeed begun.”

I peeped behind the pillow to find the box that he was referring to. It was flat, velvety and slightly heavy.

“I’m not waiting to open this one,” I explained.

“I don’t expect you to.”

“Good.”

I lifted the lid, opening the box to see what was inside. The sparkling diamonds of the necklace quickly caught my attention. They looped the gorgeous piece, ending where the pendent hung. An M was covered with the same quality diamonds, forcing me to look over at a snickering Milo.

“Is this my gift or yours?”

“You like the necklace or what, Nature?” He stuffed a piece of bread in his mouth, finding his antics comical.

“I love it, almost. Can you have the jeweler take the M off?” I joked.

“Don’t play with me, baby. You know what it is.”

“You’re trying to brand me. Is your name like my new label now?”

“The best thing about it is you’re the only one with this label.”

“Oh, you’re so full of shit.”

“Just wait until you see your new license plate, then.”

“Milo, what have you done?”

He lifted his hands, shrugging his shoulders. I bolted from bed, running full force toward the closet where I snagged a shirt and pajama pants. It felt like forever before I reached the driveway where there weren’t any sign that my truck was ever parked out front. Confusion plagued me. I turned to find Milo scratching his head, giving me that look that crossed his face when his nerves were on the line.

“Baby, what have you done?”

He aimed a fob in his hand immediately starting an engine. Ducked off in the shade, where the concrete carved a secluded space for cars to avoid the excessive heat and the Berkeley summer sun, was a sleek black Bentley truck, complete with black rims and a black bow.

“Baby! Where’s my truck?”

“Right there.” He laughed, nodding toward the Bentley.
