A True Mate is a life bond. It’s always there, never goes away. And even if you’re not together, you can’t be too far apart without being in pain. I saw that with Zenth’s older brother Zylas and Dr. Moore. Lydia once told me it’s like there’s a tether between the two of them. It can only stretch so far without being pulled back.

Maybe that’s also why I’ve never been with a Tamzell—I didn’t want to risk finding out that my random hookup is actually my True Mate.

But this isn’t a one-night stand. This is Zenth. My Zeny. I already don’t like being away from him. We do everything together. Maybe it wouldn’t be all that different. Maybe it would be amazing.

But… I’m not sure I’m ready for that.

“What are you thinking?” Zenth asks, tugging on a strand of my hair.

I want to make a joke, be playful, lighten the mood. But I’m too in my head, so I just tell him the truth. “I’m scared.”

His hairless brows pinch together. “Of what?”

The bubbles in the water pop in little clusters, like the bath is deflating. “I could be your True Mate.”

He lifts my chin. “It doesn’t matter. I want you either way.”

“No, Zeny, you don’t understand.” I get out of the tub, suddenly very aware I’m naked, and grab a towel. “I could be your True Mate. This could be it. Forever.”

A frown carves his face as he stands up. “Vera, you already are it for me. I love you. I’ve loved you since we were teenagers. Since I first noticed girls, I only ever really noticedyou.”

My head is spinning. This is too much. I don’t regret what we’ve done tonight. I’d hoped getting a room would mean we’d do a lot more. But I can’t have sex with Zenth now. It feels too risky. I’m not ready to be his True Mate, to bind myself to someone in a way that’s stronger than any marriage.

And if I’m not his True Mate… that would break me. He can say it doesn’t matter all he wants when I can still be what he hopes. But what happens once he knows I’m notthe one?

I don’t think he could give up on finding his True Mate when he knows she’s this close. He might want me, but he also wants the unique connection of a True Mate. I’m not sure he’d be able to let go of that desire in the long run. Especially not with seven years of temptation, knowing she could be any of the human women on board.

I take a step backwards, clutching the towel around my breasts. “I’m sorry… I can’t.”

After scooping up my dress, I turn to flee the bathroom. I need to get out of here before I do something stupid like drag him to bed with me.

Zenth beats me to the door and blocks my path with his long limbs. His beautiful, naked limbs.

Water drips down his smooth chest and narrow waist. Little droplets decorate his erect cock. I’m not sure if I want to get on my knees and suck him again or shove past him and get out of here.

“Tell me what you’re afraid of, Vee.”

“You want to know what I’m afraid of?” I throw my hands up and turn away from him so I don’t have to look at his glistening blue body. “How does thisnotterrify you? We both saw what happened with Zylas and Lydia.”

“Yes. I saw how incredibly amazing it could be.”

“That’s just it!” I spin around, but find him closer than I expected and practically run into his chest. He takes hold of my shoulders, but I pull away. I’m not in the mood to be touched. “You want that experience. If I’m not it, you’re still going to want that.”

“I already told—”

“And if I am your True Mate? What happens if we hurt each other and break up like Zylas and Lydia? A True Mate is forever, Zenth. I’m not ready forforever. I can’t do this.”

I dodge past him towards the door, but he catches me by the wrist and spins me into his chest. “Then don’t. We don’t have to have sex. If you’re not ready to find out, that’s fine.” His fingers grip my hips. “Just… don’t go.”

I sigh, and my breath skims his beautifully dark chest, as blue as a midnight sky. “I should go.”

“I thought what happens on Mookon 5, stays on Mookon 5.”

I look up and find him smirking. Zenth isn’t often playful, but it’s one of my favorite sides of him.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying…” He bends over and scoops some bubbles out of the tub. “That we don’t have to have sex to have a good time here.” He paints my nose with bubbles, making a boop sound that pops the tension of our conversation.
