“Be mad at me, but don’t put the wellbeing of Y-O-U-R S-O-N,” I spell, so Cooper doesn’t understand, “in jeopardy, just to hurt me. The damage that the S-W-A-M-P M-O-N-S-T-E-R would do, would be much worse. Put him first.” Milo tries to snap at me, but I hold my hand up, using my magic to shut him up.

Petty and unfair? Yes. But oh well.

“Cooper, I have to go now, but if you ever need me, just say ‘True Love’ and I’ll be there.” I wink, letting all of them see my wings. I give them a flap, as Clay and Bellamy’s jaws drop. “I’ll see you again, best friend.” I blow Coop a kiss, knowing Milo won’t let me get any closer, and wave goodbye before using my magic to take me away from there. I couldn’t stand the pain for one more second.

True

The past three days have felt like an eternity. I spent most of it curled up on Mason’s couch watching his TV and eating his food while I figured out my next steps.

I could’ve returned to my little apartment that sits not far from Cupid headquarters, but being alone wasn’t something I could handle. Mason pretended to make a fuss about me hogging up all his couch space, but I could see he was genuinely worried about me in the way he would check on me throughout the day. Not to mention the amount of food he basically force-fed me.

It’s an odd friendship we’ve struck up, but I am starting to see why he called us family. We do have a very sibling-like affection for each other.

But the more days that pass, the more hopeless I feel. Eros tried calling several times, but I just couldn’t face him with my epic screw up. Falling for a charge—let alone three—is a big no-no, and I know the second I tell him what I’ve done, he’ll sack me as a Cupid. My job is the last thing I have at this point, and I can’t handle losing that too right now.

On day four, though, something I don’t expect happens.

As I’m about to finish off yet another box of Mason’s cereal, a small voice whispers my name. Immediately, I know it’s Cooper’s voice and that he needs me.

So without bothering to change out of my pink zip hoodie and fuzzy gray pants with pink hearts, or showering the rat's nest forming in my hair, I disappear from Mason’s apartment. When I appear again, I’m standing in the middle of the guys’ living room.

Milo, Clay, and Bellamy are sitting around the room watching my appearance with shocked eyes, but I don’t have long to process what’s going on before I’m tackled in a bear hug around my waist.

“You came!” Cooper cheers excitedly.

I kneel and embrace my favorite kid in the whole world, holding on for as long as I can. “Of course I did. I told you if you ever called, I’d be here.”

He leans back and looks me over, his cute little freckled nose wrinkling a bit as he does. “You smell kinda funny, True.”

“Yeah, well, I’ve been missing you too much to think about showering, so I guess you’ll have to suffer through the odor for a minute,” I laugh, booping his cute nose. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if a chip fell out of my hair.

Milo clears his throat, stealing my attention from his son. I stand and fold my hands nervously together, fiddling with the zipper on my hoodie.

“Why am I here?” I ask, confused at the apparent intervention that’s going on.

“Well, we’ve decided that it’s only fair we hear your side of things,” Milo states in an indifferent manner. “I can’t lie and say I’m not still angry, but it’s been pointed out that my behavior was unfair after all you’ve done taking care of Coop. So I agreed to listen without judgment. We also have questions.”

He shoots the other two a sour look. Bellamy looks calm but not exactly happy either. Clay, however, smiles at me warmly.

“I appreciate the chance, and I’ll answer whatever questions you have,” I tell them, taking a seat on the edge of the coffee table, so I can stay facing them all. Coop sits down on the floor next to me, crossing his legs and resting his face on his hands as he waits for me to talk.

“As you now know, I’m a Cupid. Pretty self-explanatory what it is I do. I was assigned to all of you by my boss, including Coop. I was to be his nanny and help him heal from his mother, as well as help all of you find love in your life.”

Bellamy holds up his hand to stop me. “You saidACupid—as in, you’re not the only one? I mean, we all saw that other guy, but he didn’t look like you.”

I smile. “Yes, there’s more than one. There are thousands of Cupids in the world, and almost as many Dark Cupids like the man you saw appear. We all live amongst humans and spread our magic to help those who deserve to find their happiness with love. Be it in a partner, or just healing from a broken heart,” I explain.

“And Dark Cupids?” Milo asks.

“They punish those who abuse love. They were once Cupids like me, but they all either fell victim to their own selfish reasons or were overcome with so much darkness in their hearts they no longer wanted to help humanity.”

The guys exchange a look. “So they’re evil?” Milo questions, a bit of anger creeping into his tone. I can see where his thought process is going.

“Mason isn’t evil. Not all Dark Cupids are. Some yes, but most are just lost like Mason,” I answer, making sure he doesn’t get the wrong idea. “But do you want to keep talking about Dark Cupids, or do you want answers about me?” I inquire, steering the conversation away from Mason.

Milo waves his hand for me to continue.
