“Eros, my boss, gave me you four after many Cupids failed to help you. It’s not common for Cupids to get more than two targets at once, so you were all a special case. I have a good track record and am a bit more unorthodox than other Cupids.”

“How so?” Clay asks curiously, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees.

“Well, a lot of Cupids remain unseen with their charges. I’m more of what you’d call an undercover agent. I insert myself into the lives of my charges and spend extended time with them. There are not many Cupids in my line of work, so I’m only called in for dire situations.”

“Do you control our free will?” Bellamy asks, giving me an accusatory stare.

“No,” I say immediately. “We can only give a push. Our magic only amplifies what’s already there. It doesn’t create feelings out of nothing.”

“That night in my bathroom,” Milo suddenly interjects. “Was that magic?”

I sigh and nod. “You caught me by surprise, so I whammied you by accident. It was such a high dose of lust dust, you basically were drunk on it and didn’t remember much of what happened because it works like a hangover on that level.”

Understanding flashes across his eyes. “So that really happened? What I dreamed of after?”

I nod again. “Again, though, I can’t create what isn’t already there,” I assure him, making sure he knows I never intended for that to happen.

He doesn’t press the issue, thankfully.

“So everything we felt for you wasn’t fabricated?” Clay questions softly.

“No. I never even got to the point with any of you to hit you with one of my arrows. Any magic I used intentionally was strictly small sprinkles of Flirt and Lust magic. That’s it. And never for me. I was using it to get you to interact with others.”

“Love arrows? Like actual arrows?” Milo says, his eyebrows raised in surprise.

I summon my bow and a single arrow with its heart-shaped tip, holding them out to show them. “They don’t hurt and they aren’t permanent unless the people who are shot with them want to be in love. It’s our final bit of magic.”

The guys look at the bow and arrow with curiosity, while Coop just giggles and pokes at the end of the bow.

“You’re a warrior fairy!” he exclaims excitedly, making me laugh.

“Eh, I’m a good shot when I want to be.” I disappear both objects and place my hands back in my lap. “I just want to say that I’m sorry for my deceit. All of you started out as a job, but the longer I spent with each of you, the more I warred with myself. I wasn’t supposed to fall for you. It’s one of our biggest rules. But I couldn’t help it. Even Cooper stole my heart in ways no one ever has.” The kid in question scoots closer and lays his head against my lap.

“I love you too, True.”

I lean down and kiss the top of his head. “I hope the rest of you can forgive me. I hate that I’ve hurt any of you. Being a Cupid has been my greatest joy in life, but I would trade my bow and wings forever just so you wouldn’t hate me anymore.”

Clay is suddenly on his feet and comes to my side, grabbing one of my hands from my lap. He pulls me to my feet and turns me to look at him.

“I have never hated you. Hell, I forgave everything the moment you came back to look for Coop.”

Tears spring to my eyes as he brushes a strand of my hair from my face.

“I don’t like that you lied, but I also can’t stay angry at you knowing you were here only to help us,” Bellamy states, standing to come over as well. “Kinda dig the wings anyway, so I forgive you for the lying stuff.” He flicks one of my wings and smirks when it twitches in response.

I smile at him when he leans over and kisses my cheek. Clay doesn’t seem upset by the action at all and simply entwines my hand with his. All of us turn to glance at Milo. He’s watching the exchange between the three of us with apprehension. I can see he has an internal war going on, though I have no idea which side will win out.

Cooper gets up and walks over to his dad.

“Forgive her, dad. She takes care of me and belongs here. I don’t want her to go away again,” he tells Milo sadly.

Milo reaches up and rests his hand on his son’s shoulder. “You couldn’t live without her, huh?”

My heart does a little leap of joy when he smiles at Coop, giving me just a little bit of hope that he’ll give me another chance to prove that my love for them is genuine.

“Nope. Can you?” he asks his dad in such a profound way, you’d almost forget the kid is only six years old.

Milo looks at me, his eyes searching for the answer to that question. He stares for so long, I worry he’s about to reject me for the final time. But then, he sighs.
