But even through the pain, I still love you.

I always will.

-Winter

My heart was in my throat as I returned the letter to where I found it. My search for a charger didn’t even matter anymore. Her pain had become my pain and I needed to see her. I needed her to know how fucking sorry I was. There was nothing I could do to erase the past, but I would do everything in my power to make the future better.

As I entered the kitchen, she damn near took my breath away.

Her bright green eyes found mine and her lips parted slightly. Her dark hair hung in tousled waves with pieces framing her face. Thoughts flooded my mind of sliding my fingers through her silky locks as I was buried deep inside her. My cock twitched in my pants and Winter broke eye contact as she filled a mug with coffee for me.

“Do you want any cream and sugar?” she asked as I took it from her.

I shook my head and took a seat at the island while she poured her own cup. “No, thank you.”

She turned back around to face me with an eyebrow raised. She didn’t comment on the way I took my coffee, but I couldn’t help but smile as she dumped a gracious amount of French vanilla-flavored creamer into her own. I studied the curiosity in her expression as she plunged a spoon into the warm liquid and began to stir.

“You told your mother I was here.”

Winter stopped stirring. She lifted her eyes back to mine. “Was I not supposed to?”

“You’re free to tell her or whomever what you wish.” I lifted my mug to my lips, feeling the coffee scorch my esophagus as I took a sip. “I was simply surprised, is all.”

“Why were you surprised?” she questioned me before taking a sip of her own drink.

I shrugged. “Your parents were pretty adamant on us not being together before. They weren’t particularly quiet about their contempt for me.”

She tipped her head to the side as she watched me for a moment. Her ceramic coffee mug clinked against the quartz counter as she set it down and walked around the side of the island. I turned my head and body, following her movements until she was standing at my knees.

“We’re both consenting adults who can make our own decisions.” She placed her hands on my thighs. “I don’t care what they think, Malakai. You were never a choice for me, you were always my destiny.” She lifted her hands to my face. “This was always inevitable.”

My heart crawled into my throat. “Does this mean you are mine, Winter Reign?”

“I’ve always been yours, Kai.”

My hands found her waist and I pulled her against me. “You have, haven’t you?”

She smiled back at me and nodded. “You were just stubborn and tried to fight it.”

“Well, it’s a good thing I lost the battle.” I stared into the swirling green hues of her eyes. Curiosity struck me and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of anxiety. “What did your mother say?”

Winter’s smile didn’t falter. “She called to see how I had settled into the house. She had heard from her lawyer that the paperwork had been squared away and it had been a few weeks since we last talked on the phone since they were busy traveling.” She paused for a moment. “We’ve talked through text but she wanted to check in on me and see how things actually were.”

I pulled my lips between my teeth before releasing them with a soft pop. “As much as I appreciate the sentiment and you explaining what she called for, that’s not what I’m asking about, darling.”

“Oh, I know.” Mischief danced in her eyes as she laughed quietly. “It’s kind of fun to watch you be the one to squirm and sweat.”

A soft chuckle rumbled in my chest as I abruptly rose to my feet and lifted Winter into the air. She let out a yelp as I turned us around and set her down on the counter. “I’m glad my distress is amusing you.”

“Sorry.” She laughed and shook her head as she slid her hands around the back of my neck. “She didn’t seem fazed. She asked about you, about us, and said she was surprised this hadn’t happened sooner.”

Her words left me momentarily speechless. I was frozen in place and my fingertips were digging into her hips. My eyes desperately search hers for clarity. “She was surprised?”

“I told you how she walked in on you sleeping in my bed that one day.” She let out a soft breath as she slid her fingers through my hair. “She knew there was no way to keep us apart and it was only a matter of time before the universe would be pulling us back together. This force between us, it’s not something you can fight forever.”

I swallowed roughly over the ball of emotion lodged in my throat. “I stopped fighting long ago, darling.”

“Do you promise you won’t push me away again?” There was hesitancy in her tone and a touch of panic. Her eyes were solely focused on mine. “I won’t survive another heartbreak from you.”
