Zen stepped into my room.

I frowned. “What are you doing here?”

He gave a dismissive wave. “Babysitting duty.”

I rolled my eyes. “Thanks. I think I’ll be okay.”

I didn’t like Zen. I knew he was one of Wesley’s beta shifters, working closely with him along with his twin brother Rune, but as much as I liked Rune, I disliked Zen. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. He was rude and full of himself, and I wasn’t in the mood for him right now—especially not with how I felt.

Zen ignored my dismissal and sat on the armchair where Circe had been the last time I’d woken up.

An awkward silence stretched between us.

“Where is everyone?” I asked.

Zen clicked his tongue. “Out.”

“What does that mean? Out where?”

Zen didn’t answer me. He sat back in the chair, making himself comfortable, his legs spread wide. He put his hands on his stomach and grinned at me.

“I’m serious,” I said. “I’d rather be alone, if you don’t mind.”

“I mind,” Zen said.

I frowned. “Excuse me?”

Zen sat up, leaning forward. He bounced his leg on the ball of his foot before he stood and walked toward me.

I tried to back away from him, but my weak body didn’t work with me. Zen was almost on top of me in no time.

“We should go.”

“What?”

“Come on,” Zen said and grabbed my wrist.

His hand was large and like a vise around my wrist. When I tried to pull away, it did nothing—as if I wasn’t pulling against him at all.

“Let me go,” I said.

He pulled me up and planted me on my feet. My legs buckled, but Zen grabbed me with his arm around my waist.

“Let me go!” I pleaded.

“I don’t think so,” Zen said, and all but carried me out of the room.

I tried to fight him, but I couldn’t do anything. Not only was I weak, but he was also a powerful dragon shifter. Even if I had been perfectly fine and not sick the way I was now, I wouldn’t have been able to fight him.

Zen dragged me through the penthouse and onto the balcony, where the sliding door was already open. He shifted into dragon form almost right away.

I tried to run toward the sliding door, to get back into the house, but Zen was faster than I was. His body was large and writhing and green, scaled and terrifying, but he moved lightning fast despite his size. He blocked me off from the sliding door and growled, his head low. Smoke curled out of his nostrils, and his eyes were yellow and glowing.

I backed away from him, barely able to balance on my legs.

Zen threw his giant body into the air, and I staggered backward, tumbling to the ground. Before I fell, Zen’s large claws curled around my arms, and he lifted us into the air, powerful wings flapping.

I screamed and yelped as he lifted us higher and higher. The city shrunk beneath us, and I shivered with cold this high up. I wore only my pajamas—why was I always being kidnapped when I wore my pajamas?—and they weren’t exactly the kind of clothes for air travel.
