“I’ll go get some things and come and stay the night,” I tell Mom.

“There’s no need… Marjory is coming around to be with me. I would have asked Kath next door, but she has enough on her plate.”She’s talking about Emmerson’s mom.

Marjory is one of her old friends from her old ice-skating days. They coached together after college.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. Some girl time will be good for me.”

I’ve no idea if she’s telling the truth or not. “I’m sorry for what I said the other day,” I tell her. Dad’s making coffee in the kitchen before I leave.

“Don’t be silly, Taylor. I deserved it. I did push you, and I made many mistakes.”

I shake my head. “You always wanted what was best for me. I understand that now.”

She smiles, and I hug her again with everything I have.

“How are things with Emmerson?” she asks.

“Oh, Mom, they’re more than good.” I sigh.

“This is a bad thing?”

“She lives in Florida, remember?”

“Well.” Mom shrugs. “If you want her, you have to let her know. You won’t be playing hockey forever, so maybe you could work something out until then?”

I stare at her, stunned. “I don’t think we’re at that point. She hasn’t even been here a week.”

Mom shakes her head. “I see how you look at her, how you are with her. You two have been it for each other since before you knew what love was.”

I nod. I can’t deny that. Nor do I want to. “True. I don’t know what to do, Mom.”

She gives me a look. “You know exactly what to do, Taylor.”

It’s easier said than done. I was the one who had my heart smashed to smithereens, and I never recovered.

“Are you going to be okay tonight?” she asks.

“I’ll be fine. I’ve got to go get things ready for the game, but I’ll call you in the morning.”

“I love you, honey.”

“I love you too, Mom.” She hugs me again and sees me off to the front. Dad follows.

“It’s kinda cool seeing you guys together and not wanting to kill each other,” I add before I leave.

Dad chuckles and wraps his arm around my shoulder. “I’m sure you never thought you’d see the day.”

I have total respect for my dad showing up like this when mom called him out of the blue, and he’s still here trying to make the situation lighter.

“I’ll call you later,” I say to Dad, then I give Mom another hug before I take off.

I planned to go straight home, but I know I need to go to the one place where I can clear my head.

The lake.

I haven’t been there in forever.
