“Mia? Get Elias now,” Michael harshly whispered.

The urgency in his voice alarmed me. Blinking the sleepiness from my eyes, I threw the covers from my body.

Their - Elias' and Michael's- business was mostly done in the dark but this night was different.

Michael was flustered. That ws unusual because, similar to my husband, he rarely showed his emotions on his sleeve.

“What happened?”

At my question, Michael didn’t respond but I heard him yell before the phone dropped, only that familiar sound of gunfire screeching through the speakers. Not minding that I only wore my husband’s shirt, I ran down the stairs with the phone still to my ear as I pushed the door to Elias’ office open.

I stood frozen for a few seconds as Eli, Silas, and the man who I learned was Liam stared at me, surprised at my intrusion.

“Mia?” Elias said, drawing my attention to him. It ws effective as I ran to his arms, handing him his phone.

He immediately grabbed the phone from my trembling hands and put it on speaker as the other men in the room, gathered around us, now interested in the phone call.

Mayhem continued to scream from the other line, leaving me to wrap my hands around my body.

“Do something, Elias.”

Chapter Twenty-Six

ELIAS

Taking the sling from my hand and throwing it into the back of the SUV, I walked to Michael’s door with my men following behind me.

Unlike the phone call, his estate was dark with just the crickets to keep us company. What happened here, was long done by the time we arrived.

I pushed the door with my gun, the stench of blood greeting me as I searched for a switch to illuminate the house.

When the house was lit, bodies of armed guards covered the floor like a carpet. The blood stained the tiles as it poured from their bodies. It was a massacre. One of many I had seen in my lifetime.

“Fuck,” I heard Silas muttered.

Ignoring him, I said, “Clear the house.”

I walked up the stairs, my feet light in case we weren’t alone, Liam at my back while Eli followed Silas’ lead and cleared the rest of the house.

I felt Liam’s hand on my shoulder as we continued to what seemed like the bedrooms.

I tapped his hand, pointing my fingers to the trail of blood that led us to a door down the hall.

When we entered the room, men’s bodies were scattered on the floor in front of what seemed like a closet. It looked like they were protecting something.

We stepped over the bodies, pushing the door to uncover what they died for. It looked like an armory but when I pushed the door further I realized it wasn’t a "what" they were protecting but a "who".

My hands dropped to my waist, as I holstered my gun, taking in the sight that laid before me.

“Those fucking animals,” I heard Liam grunt, as he mirrored my actions.

I stared at Michael’s body tied to the corners of the table like a pig at a butcher shop with a knife driven into his eye. My heart broke for my wife.

As many differences as they had, I knew he loved her, and she did him. There was no perfect sibling, just an indescribable bond that one had to experience to understand. This would wreck her.

This was the one thing I couldn’t protect her from.Loss.

I circled the table, staring at Michael’s face, his mouth opened and his eyes wide. It was as if I could see the moment he knew he would die.
