I look at him, ignoring the pain of seeing my team in this position. I brought us here, I did this.

“My dad is a bad man Griffyn. We have to get out of here and find Anna before it’s too late.”

He tugs on the chains, shuddering in pain as he earns a shock through his system for the effort. They won’t budge an inch from the wall. They’re magically draining chains. Ones specially designed to hurt the person trying to escape, I know for a fact they’re illegal. Yet, they’ve been used on me before.

“Don’t fight them, it’ll only drain you further.”

I’m trying to think through every option.

“What do we do then?” Griffyn sounds furious. Good, he’ll need it.

“Wake the others.”

I tune out his shouting and movements. I know this house inside and out but there’s nothing I can do from this position.

The second Blaze is aware of his surroundings, he’s fighting the restraints. Tugging on them like an animal. His eyes are wild as he realizes he doesn’t have his dragon’s strength to do the job.

His roar is terrifying.

“Calm down!” I shout but it’s too late.

He knows we’re awake.

The door above swings open to reveal my father carrying an unconscious Anna over his shoulder. Her body swings around as a dead weight while he descends the stairs.

“Good, you’re up.”

“Let us go and we won’t tell anyone about this!” Felix shouts, staring at Anna like his world is ending.

I keep my eyes averted. I can’t let him see how much she means to me or it’s game over.

“I won’t be doing that. I have a job to do, you three just happen to be collateral damage. Although considering you mated a vampire, shifter, this message is just as much for you.”

“What message?” Griffyn asks.

Blaze keeps tugging on his restraints. I watch his body shudder every time, but he never stops.

Joka laughs manically while he watches. “You won’t be getting out, but I love watching you try.”

My father gets off on the dramatics, always making a game out of torture. He lives for the show.

He swings Anna down so her weight is against his chest, holding her facing us so we can all see. She’s completely knocked out, with no signs of life or movement.

Is she already dead?

My heart cracks right down the middle. Was everything I did a mistake? Nothing made a difference and I never got to be with her?

I take a cleansing breath and check the facts. Felix hasn’t completely lost it and he would know if she was gone. Their mate bond would be broken.

She’s alive. We still have a chance.

“Father, I’m not sure what the game is, but she means nothing to me. She’s just Felix’s mate. You’d be better off leaving them both to rot here together as punishment than whatever you have planned. I don’t know why you have me locked up,” I say as despondent as possible.

Felix turns his glare on me but it’s not as strong as it was a second ago. He knows I’m playing the game.

“Good try son. Unfortunately for you, I know the truth.”

“What truth?” I ask.
