My father looks at me like I’ve made his day by asking. “I gave her a second dose of my concoction. I didn’t want her waking up until the final moment.”

Him and his fucking dramatics.

So I have as long as it takes for Anna to wake up.

We need to stall as long as possible.

“What concoction?” Griffyn asks.

It’s a good question. We need to know what’s happening with Anna.

Joka ignores him.

“What’s the fucking concoction?” Felix roars.

“Oh, just a little something I put together. It has a sedative mixed with wolfsbane, wev, coldiron, and absque to ensure the person doesn’t burn through the sedative too quickly. Then a little something to make it both tasteless and have no smell and it was perfect.”

“You’re poisoning her?” I demand.

“I’m poisoning all of you,” he answers casually.

I want to stab him through the throat with that damn dagger.

I keep one eye on Felix, watching his facial expressions for any sign of Anna waking up. He would be the first to know.

Joka steps back, sets Anna down in a chair nailed to the floor, and doesn’t bother to strap her in.

I know that fucking chair, I hate that chair and I’ve spent too long in it to see Anna there.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Felix roars. He tugs against his chains, collapsing from the shocks for his effort.

There are tools lined up behind him for the torture he likes to inflict on his victims.

“Why draw this out?” I ask.

I can’t let him hurt her.

“It’s my entertainment for the evening. Since I first saw your little vampire at the ball I’ve been planning this out. How to make this so painful for you and your friends that you’ll never consider defying me again.” His mouth sets into a dark slash across his face.

He stares right into my eyes as he stabs a wooden stake through her leg.

She doesn’t twitch, still out cold from the drugs.

I keep myself under control only because of years of practice, that doesn’t stop sweat from breaking out over my forehead as I hold it inside.

The other three lose their minds.

Blaze’s roar shakes the room and I could swear I see his eyes flash dragon but that’s impossible with these chains and the wolfsbane in his system.

“Let’s see all the places I can hit until my dear son loses it or she wakes up screaming,” Joka taunts, squeezing her face between his fingers.

His wisps of darkness whip out and slash against her arm, drawing blood.

His powers were always my least favorite, so close to my own magic and yet I’m powerless against them.

Felix’s eye twitches.

“I will not allowmy sonto mate with anything but a dark fae,” Joka’s twisted voice says, echoing through the room.
