I ignore him and focus on Anna. I’ll keep fighting to the bitter end, but just in case, I need to get these words out. Even if she’s too unconscious to hear them. I can only hope they register somewhere in her subconscious.

“Anna I’m so fucking sorry. I thought I could protect you from exactly this if I kept my distance, but we still ended up here. With my psycho father taking you from me. I wasted any time we had together and I’ll never regret anything more.”

She doesn’t move.

My father throws his head back and laughs. “You thought you could keep her from me? I’ve known for years who she would be to you. Your mate! You never stood a chance.”

He comes up to me and slashes his dagger against my chest, right over my heart. Before I can react, he’s out of reach.

“That can serve as a reminder that you can never escape me. Shall I give you another? Perhaps deeper this time.”

One second she’s as still as a dead body, the next Anna launches herself at him, stabbing him in the kidney with one of his torture knives.

Joka grunts and shoves Anna down, knocking the knife away and circling a hand around her throat.

The knife falls just close enough that I can reach it with my toe, pulling it to me.

Anna curses him out while kicking every spot she can reach.

I jimmy the knife into the lock of the chains, trying to get them loose.

Drywall crumbles around Blaze.

Felix screams her name.

Griffyn is trying to break his hand to slip it free.

Joka throws her against the wall. Her head makes a sickening thump when it hits before she slides to the ground.

I feel utterly worthless with these chains on me. I follow Griffyn’s lead and try to dislocate my shoulder to get free but the angles are all wrong.

“Anna, run. Run and get out of here! Leave us behind, you can do it!” I shout.

She ignores me. Stupid, stubborn woman.

The best sight I’ve ever seen follows my command.

A snarling, raging Rion, covered in blood races down the stairs with his vampire speed. He uses his superior strength to throw Joka against the wall before racing to Anna.

Blaze breaks free of his chains in a shower of molding and dust before the shift starts to take over.

Rion rips the stake out of Anna’s leg and lifts her into his arms. His eyes are pure death when he looks around at the rest of us.

He moves over to Felix, rips open his wrist, and presses it against Anna’s mouth, feeding her and giving her strength.

Blaze’s dragon takes the roof off the house before fire explodes from his jaw.

The second Anna can stand on her own she grabs the poisonous dagger and races over to my father who is stuck under rubble.

She raises the knife, then hesitates, looking at me.

There will be consequences to our actions, but we will deal with them when the time comes.

“Make it hurt Willson. He doesn’t deserve to live.”

She grins with a too-wide smile before stabbing him in the heart and twisting.

I watch the life drain from his eyes and it’s the most glorious feeling in the world, next to knowing Anna is safe and alive.

It’s a freedom I never thought was possible.

One foe down. One less threat to Anna’s safety.

How many are left to go?
