I start pacing, unable to hold in my agitation.

“What happened?” Anna asks, eyeing me warily.

Normally she looks at me with a challenging fire in her eyes but apparently, even she’s tamed by seeing me like this.

“Spit it out. You’re stressing us out,” Felix says.

I take a deep breath.

“My father has summoned us for dinner tonight.”

Everyone freezes but I keep pacing.

“And this is bad right?” Griffyn asks.

I whirl on him. “Of course it’s bad! Are you an idiot?”

He throws both hands up, warding me away. “Calm down dude. You never talk about your dad. How would we know what this means?”

He’s right, but it’s better if they don’t know anything. It’s not their fight and being involved will only hurt them in the long run.

“Can’t we just not go?” Felix asks hopefully.

“You guys are on a mission. Doesn’t that take priority?” Anna asks, slipping her hand into Felix’s.

“I already tried that,” I grind out, “my father threatened our jobs if we don’t come and if Felix doesn’t bring his mate.”

A growl tears out of Felix’s throat. His eyes flash feline.

“He wants my mate there?”

I nod.

“We aren’t going,” Felix declares.

“You’ll lose your job if you don’t,” Anna says, tugging Felix closer and running her hands across his shoulder.

“Then he can fire us,” Griffyn says.

“You wouldn’t be on this case anymore and we have to find Killian,” she says.

Another growl. Blaze is as stiff as a board and Griffyn looks like he wants to kill me.

I would feel the same if it was their baggage coming to haunt us.

“So then, what’s the plan? How do we get through this dinner?” Anna asks.

Everyone looks to me for an answer. I start pacing again.

“My father has an ulterior motive, he doesn’t invite people over just to get to know them. If we go, we need to be on high alert at all times. Don’t answer questions with anything more than vague answers. We don’t want to give him anything to use against us.”

“Do you have any idea what those motives might be?” Griffyn asks.

I shake my head. “Something political or he thinks he can use us in a scheme. He probably wants the Alpha Team under his thumb so don’t give him anything he can use against us.”

“Then why invite Anna?” Blaze asks.

I can’t look at her right now. The terror I’m feeling at having her around my father would be clear.
