“Goodbye, father. Enjoy living with the choices you made.”

He tries not to show it, but I note the suspicion in his eye as he tries to figure out if I’m bluffing or not.

He swings his gaze to Gabriella who stares at him with pure hatred burning in her eyes and then he turns to Saint who gives him fuck all back.

Then he shakes his head and says with a deep sigh. “I thought you were better than this, Killian. I really hoped you were, because now your grandfather’s legacy is fucked.”

He appears almost amused. “You know nothing about my business. How far my connections stretch and the power behind it. You think the Dark Lords will protect you? They hate you. They want to distance themselves from the Vieri family because you just aren’t good enough.”

He laughs as if the situation amuses him.

“Gold Hawk Enterprises won’t renew your membership and your pretty, innocent wife heading up all the charities in the world won’t give you respectability. They know who you are and what depths you sink to, and they are gathering to vote you and my father out. So, enjoy this life while you’ve got it, Killian, because the clock is ticking.”

He smiles as if he hasn’t a care in the world. “Say hi to your brother and sister for me. They know where I am if they want to join the winning side. You…” He shakes his head and hisses, “Made your choice when you sided with Don Vieri over your own father. I’ll see you in hell before I speak to you again.”

He turns and snaps at Gabriella, who is sobbing in the chair.

“Come. You’re an embarrassment.”

As she makes to leave, Saint steps forward and pushes her back in her chair and she says with alarm, “What’s going on? Let me leave.”

My father snarls, “Let her go, or is imprisonment something you want to add to your increasingly long rap sheet?”

“On the contrary, I have an exit interview to conduct. When Gabriella was fired from my organization, I neglected to do one, so to stick to the letter of the law, we will have it now.”

He rolls his eyes. “Do you take me for a fool, Killian? She comes with me.”

“Then perhaps you would like to wait outside. This won’t take longer than one hour, two at the most.”

I stare at him with no emotion at all, no expression and no actual shits to give because when he walks out of this office, I will never see him again.

“You know what to do.” He snaps in her direction and storms out of the office, and I swear my heart is pounding as I watch him go. I don’t let emotion in, I can’t because this is my cross to bear and I won’t let my grandfather down.

* * *

As the doorslams behind him, Saint follows him out, as arranged, and I turn my attention to Gabriella, who is trying to regain her usual composure.

“Thanks, Kill.” She smiles softly and I sigh inside.

“For what, exactly?”

I lean back and she whispers, “For saving me from him. You don’t understand what he’s capable of.”

“You think I don’t know what my own father is capable of?”

I laugh derisively. “You forget, I’ve lived with the bastard my entire life and I have learned from the master. Your problem now lies with me, Gabriella, because the apprentice is about to become the master and I have learned my lesson well.”

I fix her with a frown and say darkly, “Now about your exit interview.”

CHAPTER47

PURITY

Iam so tired. Charity work is exhausting. I never realized what was involved in making connections and involving myself in this world. The women I meet scare me. The polished wives of Killian’s business associates and the women in charge.

Endless lunches that appear to offer an opportunity to compare wealth. Handbags, jewelry and the size of our home. Where we’re vacationing and who we regard as close friends and at the end of it, they deliver a speech about giving back to society and assure the recipient of several hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations before wrapping up the meeting and feeling good about themselves.

I want more.
