I don’t get to finish my sentence because the loudest noise rocks the coffee shop and Jonny yells, “Get under the table!”

He pulls Faith down with him and as I join them, I say fearfully, “What’s happening?”

“Bomb.” Jonny whispers, pushing both our heads down and saying urgently, “Stay where you are.”

The sound of shattering glass rains down on us and the screams of our fellow diners ring in my ears. I have never been as terrified as I am now and when the sound fades Jonny say urgently, “Wait there.”

He makes to leave and Faith yells, “No Jonny! It’s not safe. Stay here.”

“It’s fine, darlin’. I’m used to explosions. You know that. It’s my job.”

Faith’s eyes are full of terror as she watches him leave and then she reaches for my hand and whispers, “Are you ok, honey?”

“Yes, but what happened?”

“I don’t know?”

It seems like hours before Jonny returns but can only be minutes and he drops down beside us and says with a worried shake to his head, “You can come out but–” he stares at me with so much pity in his eyes, I swear my heart stops beating.

“What, Jonny? What is it?” My voice trembles and then he breaks my world apart by saying, “Your car. It’s in pieces.”

“What?” I pull myself up and rush to the window and I swear every ounce of blood drains from my face as I stare at the remnants of Killian’s car. The sirens and shouts fade into the distance as my heart shatters inside me.

“Killian. Oh my god, no!”

Without thinking, I race for the door and Jonny says, “No, Purity!” He reaches for me, but I’m quicker and wrench the door open as Faith screams, “Purity! It’s not safe. Don’t go out there.”

I don’t hear her. I can only hear my own ragged sobs and the sound of my heart breaking as I rush toward the scene, the tears pouring down my face as I pray, ‘Please God, no. Please don’t let Killian be inside that car. If I ask you for nothing more in life, please make him safe.’

I suppose in this moment something hits me I think I’ve known for a long time now. The pain I’m experiencing now can only mean one thing.

I love him and I probably have from that first night, he saved me from Mrs. Collins.

With an agonized scream, I race toward the building and then I hear a sound I’m wondering exists only in my imagination.

“Purity!”

I glance up and running toward me with so much emotion on his face, is the man I have only just realized I am deeply in love with.

I fall into my husband’s arms and as they close around me, I sob on his shoulder as he buries his face in my hair and whispers, “I thought I’d lost you. Thank God, Purity. Thank God.”

I can’t speak because there are too many tears and then he pulls back and stares fiercely into my eyes and says with so much emotion it makes me cry harder.

“I love you. I love you so fucking much and if it takes me the rest of my life to prove it, I will.”

I smile through my tears, marveling that deep pain can turn into joy so quickly and I say in a rush, “I love you too, Killian. I realize that now. When I thought I lost you, it hit me hard. I can’t live without you.Wecan’t live without you.”

“We?” he stares at me in confusion as I reach for his hand and place it on my belly, and whisper, “I was coming to tell you, we’re having a baby. You’re going to be a father.”

He stares at me in shock and then I see something I never believed he was capable of. His eyes change and the pain and secrets are pushed aside as they brim with tears of happiness. It causes the world to stop spinning as I witness a miracle and his voice shakes as he whispers, “I’m going to be a father.”

I nod, laughing through my happy tears, and then he cups my face in his hands and kisses me so deeply, so emotionally and with so much love, I never want it to end.

CHAPTER50

KILLIAN

Ihave never experienced relief like it. When I saw Purity running toward me, I couldn’t get to her quickly enough. I went from the deepest despair to the purest joy in a second and as she fell into my arms, I vowed never to waste a minute of my time with her — to tell her I loved her — because I do.
