I gape at her take on my words.
"Olivia, I don't mean it that way."
"Well, that is what it sounds like. You just cut me off like my thoughts and words don't matter. And I don't take it lightly."
"Olive,"
"And how dare you speak so lowly about my fiancé? He is a wonderful man who has done nothing but keep me happy and make me strong. I’m so proud of him and excited to call him my husband soon. So, I’m warning you now. Watch your tongue when talking about him, okay?"
A grin breaks across Olivia's face after she’s done with her speech. Her eyes sparkle with wetness my hands itch to wipe away, and her arms around my neck get tighter. I stare at her with an open mouth, shocked by her resolve.
"Do you truly think that?"
Olivia places her palms on my cheeks wiping at my eyes. I notice then that a few tears have escaped my eyes.
"Yes, Ethan. I do. And I want you to tell me when you feel like this so I can tell you all over again."
I laugh wetly.
"Won't you get tired?"
This time it's Olivia's turn to giggle.
"Nope. I think I can come up with multiple creative ways to show how much I love you."
I sigh and wipe my eyes.
"It must be annoying how much I doubt myself."
"Well, in that case, I must be annoying too."
"What?"
"Sometimes my insecurities get the best of me too. I hope I can rely on you to make me feel better."
I tighten my hold around Olivia's waist.
"Of course, you can."
"Hm, maybe we should come up with a word to alert each other if we’re feeling down. That way, even if we don't want to talk about it, we still know how the other is feeling and we can help each other."
"I think I like that idea."
"Perfect! Let's pick a random word."
We think for a while before I come up with one.
"Grapefruit?"
Olivia looks at me, unimpressed. I shrug in response.
"Look. Remember when we accidentally ate a bad grapefruit and got sick?"
Olivia shudders at the memory.
"Oh, how can I forget?"
"Exactly. We promised never to mention it again. So, if it's our codeword, we know we mentioned it because it's serious."
