Markus tried to hold her, but whatever power she was emanating didn’t allow that to happen.

“This isn’t your fault,” he said sternly. “The heads-up you did give them will have helped, and so can we.”

“Oh, yes. We’re going to fucking help. Help unlike anything they’ve ever seen.” With those final words, Lia charged forward, shifting into her pearl-colored unicorn as she ran.

Markus ran after her, his hickory-colored wolf quickly coming into appearance as he gave chase.

I glanced at Grayson once more. “Should we join them or search for Johnathon and Hazel?”

“Join them,” he answered, then added, “for now.”

Before we took off after our friends, his hand wrapped tightly around the back of my neck, jerking me forward until I was pressed flush against his chest. Our eyes locked in a battle of mixed emotions.

“Be fucking careful,” he demanded before his mouth crashed down onto mine.

My fingers gripped his shirt tightly, bunching the fabric until my hands began to hurt.

I pulled back first, knowing we didn’t have time on our side. “You, too.”

He nodded stiffly, and then we ran.

Right into the middle of a war.

Even though I still had the daggers strapped to my thighs, I opted to let my wolf loose first. She seemed just as eager as I was to end this chaos, and I was glad to let her exert the pent-up rage we’d both been holding on to.

A russet wolf I recognized was being pinned down by an ebony one I’d never seen before and that I felt confident wasn’t one of Ryder’s. My wolf’s head rammed right into his side, sending him in the other direction and giving the prone wolf time to get up.

Then the attacker circled back, revealing that he had crimson eyes and was salivating at the mouth.

A quick glance told me that more than half of these wolves had similar eyes, which would at least help us know who we needed to be fighting against, but it also meant that they were magically enhanced.

Ryder was supposed to have given the potions that we’d brought back to the wolves, but I doubted they’d been used yet, meaning we weren’t fighting on an even playing field.

The opposing shifter charged for me this time, and I was quick to use my glowing paw and claws to hit him in his head, knocking him unconscious with ease.

The wolf who’d just been on the ground clearly wasn’t satisfied with this one merely being knocked out. He dove for the guy’s throat, ripping it open with one bite.

I moved on, trying not to think too hard about all the deaths that were happening around us, and searched for Grayson. He was fighting two wolves but had the upper hand, so I moved on.

As I turned around, sharp teeth clamped down on my tail, and I snarled loudly.

Fucker.

A tan, red-eyed wolf with brown patches on his sides stared me down, then came at me with teeth and claws at the ready.

I tumbled to the ground with the beast, using my advantage of magically charged strength to overpower him.

When I pinned the bastard down, I went for his throat, but his back legs slammed into my stomach, not only forcing me off of him, but cutting into my skin.

Blood dripped slowly from the wounds, but I didn’t let that stop me.

From the corner of my eye, I saw the attacking wolf leap for me, so instead of getting up, I stayed prone until he was closer. Then I opened my jowls as far as they would go and closed them when he landed.

My teeth clamped down on his snout, and while the idea of tearing his face in half repulsed me, I acted on adrenaline and jerked my head to the left before spitting his nose onto the ground.

The howl that ripped from his chest almost allowed me to feel bad for the fucker, but then he raked his claws over my shoulder, thankfully not cutting through my fur.

I got up and put him out of his misery. My bite was quick and efficient, breaking the bones in his neck and ending the suffering. Not that he deserved any mercy, but I had other people to save.
