She growled in response, working to get back up just as we heard a familiar howl.

Grayson.

Our mate was coming to help, but would he get here in time?

I couldn’t be sure, but either way, we still had to fight for our life. For the one we deserved.

Chapter36

GRAYSON

When Kinsley had run toward the forest with Sammy on her back, I’d known exactly what she was doing, but I hadn’t been able to stop her in time. Not that I didn’t want the boy safe, but I’d rather she hadn’t gone off alone.

Instead, I’d stayed behind and focused on ending the battle in the park, so I could join her without worrying about bringing the fight to where people were supposed to be safe in the bunker.

That was really fucking hard for me to do, but it wasn’t about me. It was about Kinsley and what she would want.

I hadn’t brought out my demon side yet, because I didn’t want to hurt innocent wolves, but now that the circumstances had changed, there was no holding back.

The other wolves needed to move the fuck out of my way or get burned.

My wolf’s size grew as his coat darkened to the color of burnt charcoal and forest-green flames licked over his fur.

I searched for more crimson eyes and charged forward, growling loudly as I moved to warn people out of my way.

Most did, but some weren’t quick enough and yelped when they were singed. Still, I stayed focused and targeted the attacking pack.

The first red-eyed wolf stupidly came for me, and all it took was one light bite to his neck to end his life.

The chestnut-colored wolf tried to fight back in the split second he had before his body became engulfed in flames, but his claws and teeth couldn’t hurt me, not with my demon power on full display.

Others began to retreat, but in this state, I was bigger and faster than them. I easily took one after another down. Lia and Markus were on the opposite side of the park now doing the same, but I could see even from several dozen yards away that the unicorn was tiring.

Her power wasn’t endless, and there would only be so much Markus could do to protect her when she was tapped.

I still hadn’t seen Johnathon or the witch, even though I knew all of these wolves had some sort of magical enchantment coursing through them.

More and more of them kept coming from the alleyways, and the longer I fought, the sooner I expected Kinsley to return to the fight.

Nearly ten minutes later, Lia and Markus were nowhere to be seen, and the wolf who had been coming for me dropped to the ground before I even touched him.

The crimson glow that had been in his eyes disappeared, and his body twitched in place.

One quick glance showed me that was the same for the rest of the wolves.

Hazel.

She must have been linked to them all and needed her power back, which had to mean only one thing.

They’d found my mate, and she was alone.

Ryder came racing toward me in his human form, but I didn’t stay to answer his questions. Hell, I didn’t even know where he’d been this whole time, but I didn’t have time to care.

I let out a rageful howl, then raced through the forest to find my mate. As we ran, and the closer we got to Kinsley, the more my flames began to diminish. My wolf easily picked up on our mate’s scent, and the farther into the trees we went, the more magic we could sense.

Painstakingly, I slowed my wolf so that we could sneak into whatever was going on.

I could hear something loud echoing up ahead, and when we finally saw what was happening, I couldn’t fucking believe it.
