“I would never have left,” Megan says defiantly. “Why would I give up on a job I love?”

It makes me feel good hearing that. A calming warmth blooms in my chest. The thought of Megan leaving never sat well with me at all.

But this isn’t about me. Megan is more upset about that bastard Eric. What had been going through his mind calling her to say he was looking forward to seeing her at the wedding? Who does that?

“Well, let’s just say he’s on very thin ice now, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on him,” I assure her.

“I don’t want him to lose his job because of me,” Megan says quickly. “As much as I would love to stick it to him, I don’t want that.”

“You let me worry about that.” I lean over and pick up my glass. “But I can tell you, even if Eric does actually marry Anna, he is definitely not becoming the next CEO. I’ve got someone else in mind who’s been with the company for years. I’d eat my arm before I put Eric anywhere near the board members.”

Megan finally shows a slight smile. “I didn’t think you’d allow him to take over from you. But I did have a moment where it crossed my mind.”

“Trust me, I don’t think he’ll last until the end of the financial year,” I take another swig from my glass. The wine was going to my head and making me feel warm all over. “If he’s lucky, he might get a couple more years, but he’s not going anywhere unless he bucks up.”

“If he’s been doing as you tell me, I can’t see that happening,” Megan purses her lips. “I wonder what Anna said to make him think that’s going to happen.”

“I don’t know,” I shrug, hoping my daughter hasn’t been spreading more lies. “Maybe he had this mentality himself. Or it’s a mixture of the two. No matter what, he’s not getting what he wants.”

“I hope he gets what he deserves,” Megan scoffs. “Preferably where nobody can find the body.”

I almost choke on my last sip of wine when she says that. I keep forgetting that Megan has the ability to say something so out of the blue that it takes me by surprise. I rub my chest as I get over my coughing fit.

“Next time warn me when you’re going to say something like that,” I say with a laugh.

“Sorry.” There’s a sly glint in her eye. “I’ll give you advance notice for anything I say in the future.”

I don’t know what to say to that. At least she’s starting to behave more like her usual self. Hopefully, this time away will be enough for her to calm down and relax. My vice president will take anything that needs my attention until Monday. Once I’ve gotten hold of Megan’s cell phone and turned it off, it will be just the two of us, no outside interference.

The idea of that stirs something inside me. I wish my brain wouldn’t wander off into that territory.

Suddenly, everything goes black. The lights snap off, bathing us both in darkness. Megan lets out a gasp, and I fight back a groan. Great, did this have to happen now?

“What’s going on?” Megan asks. She sounds a little nervous. “Is it a power cut?”

“More than likely,” I sigh, remembering I forgot fresh batteries for the emergency flashlights. “Hopefully, the lights will come back on shortly.”

Megan shifts closer to me on the couch. “What if they don’t?”

I peer at her through the darkness. I can see her shape, and I hear the fear in her voice. Then I remember something she told me before.

“Fuck, I forgot you were afraid of the dark.”

“I’ll live.” From the sound of it, she doesn’t believe herself. “What do we do now?”

“I’ll just go and get some candles.” Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I get to my feet. “We can light those and make the most of it until the lights come back on.”

“What if they…?”

“They will,” I reassure her. “This has happened before. I just can’t give a specific time.” I manage to find the flashlight on my phone, shining it toward the door. “Don’t go anywhere. I’ll be right back.”

“Fuck that.” I turn to see Megan getting her phone out. “I’m coming with you. No way are you leaving me on my own right now.”

The thought of having Megan staying close to me while I deal with a power outage should not be as arousing as it is. I’m beginning to think I shouldn’t touch the wine anymore. Sighing, I hold out my hand.

“Come on, then.”
