“Megan? Hello?”

“Hmm? What?” I respond without looking at her.

“You’re not paying attention, are you?” Natalie sighs. “Honestly, you’re the one who wanted to watchThe Last of Us, and you’re the one not even paying attention.”

It takes me a moment for me to realize where I am. Natalie and I were having a binge-watching evening at her apartment, and I have been begging her to watchThe Last of Usfor a while now. It’s not her thing, but I know she’ll love it. Now I’m embarrassed that she is watching it and I’m not.

“I have played the game, Natalie.”

“But you’re the one who wanted to watch it, and I allowed it because you’re my best friend. I even got the popcorn you like.” Natalie pauses the TV and turns to face me. “What’s going on? You’ve been out of sorts for a couple of weeks now. Clark has told me that you are either off in your own thoughts or running around trying to be so busy that you barely stop, if you do at all. He’s getting worried about you.”

“It’s just busy at work right now. You know how it can get.”

“No, it isn’t. It’s something else, and we’re getting worried about you.” Natalie props her head on her hand. “Talk to me. What’s been going on with you?”

I can’t tell her. She’s Joel’s daughter, and I can’t tell my friend that I slept with her dad. She is going to be horrified. Teasing me about having a crush on her father is one thing but sleeping with him… is a whole another issue.

She most definitely does not need to know about all the details. It’s just not something I can share.

And I’ve been trying very hard not to think about Joel. Mr. Evans. I don’t have a clue what to call him anymore. I’m done up in knots, and I have been since I told Joel that we can’t do it again. We have to go back to being boss and employee. It is the smart thing to do.

Because if we get together, and that chemistry we have explodes…

I know that it’s going to be messy, and I cannot afford to go through that. It will make my job difficult, and I would rather not do that to either of us.

Work is really challenging already. You think this is going to make your situation worse?

“Megan!”

I squeak when Natalie claps her hands. I press a hand to my chest, waiting for my heart to slow down.

“Please don’t do that, Natalie! That scared the shit out of me!”

“I’m just making sure you’re with me in the real world. We’re having a binge-watching night with a show you wanted me to watch, and you’re not even paying attention. I want to know why, and you’re going to tell me.”

“You make it sound like you’re going to get the thumb screws out.”

“I should, seeing as you’re the one who’s being cagey, and you’re not normally like this. You’re the one who’s focused, not me.”

She does have a point. I know I’ve been acting differently lately, but how can I tell anyone about what I’ve done? Sure, I’m not the first person who’s slept with their boss, but I thought I’d never be someone who did that.

I don’t regret having sex with Joel. Not when it’s that amazing. I do regret that he was my boss and I did it anyway.

I should have turned around and left when I realized that I was in the wrong room.

I shift on the couch.

“Well, it’s not something I can talk about. Not without things getting complicated.”

“Try me. We talk about everything, don’t we?” Natalie frowns. “It’s not about Anna, is it? Is she still harassing you?”

“No. I thought she would, but she’s actually left me alone.”

Although that doesn’t make me feel better. It’s unnerving to know that Anna and Eric are leaving me alone, but that just means they’re going to jump on me with someone else in the near future. With everything going on with Joel, I’d mostly forgotten about all of that.

“I wish it was about Anna. It would make things easier.” I cross my legs, adjusting the seam of my leggings. “But it’s not. Surprisingly.”

“Then what is it? I’ve asked Clark, and he has no idea why you’re behaving so weirdly, either.”
