“I did call and ask Anna about that, but she said that they would have the wedding they wanted in that time frame,” Natalie explains. “Something about Megan working to the bone to make sure they have what they wish for.”

I don’t like the sound of that. It sounds like Anna’s being malicious toward Megan.

“Even a wonder woman like Megan wouldn’t get it done in that short space of time.”

Natalie gives a sardonic laugh. “I did tell her that, but Anna is insistent. She says that Megan is efficient, and she can do anything. Then she mentioned something about finding a guy for Megan as a thank-you for her hard work.”

I almost drop my phone. Fumbling before it bounces off my desk, I put it back to my ear.

“Excuse me? What did you just say?” I’m shocked by the instant knot of jealousy in my gut.

“That’s what she told me, Dad. I’m not making it up.”

“I was hoping that you were,” I rub a hand over my chest. Why does it suddenly feel tight? “How could she do that after she took Eric from her? It feels like she’s rubbing everything in Megan’s face.”

“That’s pretty much what she’s doing.”

“Has she admitted to that?” I ask.

“She doesn’t need to. I know my sister,” Natalie snorts rudely. “I can’t believe we’re related. She’s such a bitch.”

“Natalie,” I warn. “She’s still your sister.”

“And with the way she behaves toward everyone, I don’t want to acknowledge that link too much.”

I can’t blame her for that. I’m more worried about Megan, though. She’s already organizing the wedding - something she said she would do - and Anna’s just going to make it worse. She seemed very smug at the engagement party. To think that she would try and auction the single women off for more money, and to use Megan as the main prize. I hope that her ears are still ringing from when I scolded her.

“I still don’t get why Megan accepted being the wedding planner,” Natalie goes on. “She’s given me an answer, but I still don’t understand.”

I’m as curious as anyone about Megan’s decision. “What did she say about it?”

“So, she knew what was coming and could plan accordingly to give her the least amount of hassle. The last thing she wanted was Eric or Anna messaging her, talking about the wedding like they’re old friends.”

I let out a derisive snort. “They’re still able to ambush her at the engagement party. They go off the plan. And you say that Anna’s going to push a guy onto Megan as a thank you?”

“That’s what she’s hinting at,” she says. “I shudder to think who she’s going to pick out, though. Anna’s taste in men is on the superficial appearances.”

“I won’t argue with that.” I’m getting a headache talking about my daughter again, but Natalie needs a rant. Maybe I should have gone to lunch with her, then we could actually have this conversation. “I don’t understand why she does this. She was the other woman in this situation, so she should be a little more respectful as she’s the one causing most of the trouble.”

“Sometimes, the other woman doesn’t think like that, Dad,” Natalie reminds me. “And Eric is to blame as well. Just like Mom was to blame when she was sleeping around.”

“I know that. I haven’t forgotten him.” My blood begins to boil at the mere mention of his name.

“I’m surprised you haven’t fired him yet,” Natalie says with a dry chuckle.

“I’m afraid it’s not as simple as that,” I sigh. “I can’t fire him simply because he cheated on my personal assistant. But he’s on thin ice, and he is being watched.”

“Anna said she was looking forward to having Eric as the CEO once you retire. And she was talking about it being soon, like you’re too old already.”

I laugh at that. “Not a chance of that happening. Even if I accepted him as my son-in-law, he wouldn’t be becoming the CEO. It’s not going to work like that, especially with his poor work ethic.”

“Well, they’re under that impression. And you’re not old! You’ll be there for years, probably by the time your grandchildren are fully grown.”

“I’m glad you have faith in my longevity, Natalie.”

Natalie giggles. “Anyway, I was going to ask you something, anyway. It’s about Megan.”

My interest is piqued. “What?”
