“What’s happened? Is it Anna again?”

“She sent me an invoice for the engagement party.”

It takes me a moment to realize what she had said. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Apparently, I ruined the engagement party, so I should have to pay. And that’s not all.” Megan lowers her hands, looking miserable. “Eric is trying to get me to be his mistress.”

First the conversation with Natalie earlier, and now this. I don’t know if this day can get any stranger.

“How do you know that? Did he tell you?”

“Face to face,” she nods. “He came to my parents’ house today and said he wanted to carry on with me while being married to Anna. He made it sound like he was doing me a favor.” Megan scowls, “Of course, I told him to fuck off and I don’t want him anywhere near me, but I don’t think he’s going to stop. And while I was talking to Anna about why she gave me an invoice, she said that Eric’s been sneaking out and staying at the office longer. She accused me of getting him back.”

“What?”

“I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve been trying to keep my composure with them, but it’s cracking lately, and I’m close to falling apart.” She blinks hard, and I see that she’s close to tears. “I wish I had said no to being their wedding planner now. I should have told them to go to hell, but I wanted to keep tabs so they wouldn’t harass me. Now that was a mistake because they were going to harass me regardless.”

I can’t remember the last time I saw Megan crying, and I can’t help myself. Getting up, I come around the table and sit beside her. She doesn’t push me away as I pull her into my arms, cradling her against my chest. Megan sniffles, but she doesn’t cry. She leans into me, stiff to begin with, and soon she relaxes into my arms. I stroke her hair, inhaling the aroma from her shampoo. She is always changing it, saying that she doesn’t care what it smells like as long as it does the job. This time, she smells like strawberries and cream.

I like it. This is probably one of my favorite smells.

“I’m sorry.” Megan takes a deep breath and straightens up, slowly moving away from me. “I didn’t mean to do that.”

“You’re allowed to have a breakdown every now and then,” I say.

“I haven’t broken down yet. Not quite.” She rubs the heel of her hands against her eyes. “This is meant to be my day off, and I just want to scream. How did I get into this mess?”

“I’m sorry I have a daughter with no morals.”

She smiles sadly. “You weren’t the only one raising her. Maybe she was always like this. I just don’t see why she went after Eric other than to stick it to me.”

“Why would she do that?”

Megan frowns, adjusting fidgeting with her phone. “I remember an argument near the beginning of this, and I asked her why. It sounded like she wanted something of mine and wanted to see if she could do it. I don’t know, maybe I’m remembering it wrong. It was a while ago. As for Eric, that bastard is happily admitting that he’s a gold-digger.”

That doesn’t surprise me. I’ve heard a few things about his behavior at work as well. I thought Eric would leave Megan alone, but clearly, he was harassing her as well.

“I don’t know why I’m talking to you about this,” Megan says suddenly, and she starts to get up. “Maybe I’m just needing someone who isn’t my brother to talk to. I don’t know why I called my boss.”

“Megan—" I jump up, wincing as I bash my thigh against the tabletop. “There’s nothing wrong with needing someone to vent to. We all need to do it.”

“But you’re my boss,” she says. “I shouldn’t be having this conversation with you.”

“But I’m also Anna’s father, and the least I can do is listen to how she’s been behaving.” I scramble out from the bench as Megan hesitates, putting my hands on her shoulders. “I thought we had a good relationship anyway, regardless of what’s happened recently. You should be able to come to me if there’s something wrong.”

“I know, but…”

I put my finger to her lips, which seems to silence her. “Don’t worry about anything. I’ll handle both of them, especially Eric. I’m not having an employee bothering my assistant.”

Megan frowns. “Don’t do anything stupid, please. I don’t want it to come back to me.”

“You don’t have to worry about that. I’ve got a few things in mind.”

I plan to speak to Eric about this tomorrow. He might think that he’s safe because he’s assuming he will become my son-in-law, but I don’t have loyalties like that, especially with the way he became my daughter’s fiancé. I’m not about to have him disrespect someone I care about.

You more than simply care about Megan. When are you going to admit it?

“What is going on here?”
