“I’m not surprised you didn’t, seeing how smitten you were with him. I still want to tie him into a knot he can’t get out of for what he did.”

There are times when I’m glad that Clark is a little over-protective. I wouldn’t care if he cared after Eric, especially after how Eric suggested that we could carry on a sexual relationship even after he got married because he thought he could do it. Cheating on me to further himself in the company is bad enough—and illogical—but cheating on Anna because he believes I’m still hung up on him… is something else. If I hadn’t been in shock, I would’ve ripped Eric’s limbs from his body myself.

I sigh when I hear my phone going off again. God, why won’t they stop.

“Fuck,” I mutter, putting my can down and getting up. “Whoever it is just don’t get the message.”

“Maybe you should turn your phone off,” he says, as if it’s the most obvious solution in the world.

“What if I’m needed for work?”

Clark rolls his eyes. “Then put a different ringtone on for work numbers so you know which ones to filter. It’s going to be buzzing away like a wasp if you don’t.”

I give him a sideways glance. “I thought bees were the ones that buzzed.”

“Wasps are more annoying,” he shrugs, the hint of a smile on his face.

I can’t argue with that. Picking up my phone, I see the multiple missed calls and messages. There are some voicemails as well. I open up the messages, and I see they are all from the same number. And from the wording, I know who they’re from.

“God, he doesn’t know when to give up.” I’m so exasperated I could scream.

“It’s Eric, right?”

“Yep. And from the look of it, he’s furious.” I delete the messages, feeling a little weight come off my shoulders once they disappear. “I’m sure he’s been leaving voice messages as well.”

“He’s angry, isn’t he?” Clark sips his soda with a loud slurp. “I wonder what’s happened for him to be this pissed.”

“I have no idea, and I don’t really care.”

The sound of someone knocking on the door makes me jump. Now my heart is beginning to beat faster. What if Eric has come to confront me? He must have slipped into the building somehow.

Glancing at me, Clark gets up. Signaling for me to stay put, he goes over to the door and checks through the peephole. Then he looks at me with a bemused look and shakes his head.

“It’s not Eric,” he mouths.

Just as I’m about to ask who it is, I hear Joel’s voice on the other side of the door.

“Megan? Are you there?”

My heart is still racing, but for a different reason. Joel is here. Why isn’t he at work? Clark is watching me, waiting for my response. If I say so, he will turn Joel away.

But I don’t want that. I want to see him despite what’s going on.

Taking a deep breath, I nod at my brother.

Joel

For a moment, I think that I’m going to be turned away. Or maybe Megan isn’t there, and I’m just talking through a door into an empty apartment. Then I hear the bolt being taken off, and the door opens. The hulking frame that is Megan’s brother is there filling the doorway. He looks me up and down.

“Hey.” God, the guy puts me on the back foot. He knows how to be intimidating. “Is Megan here?”

“Joel.”

My heart stutters when I hear her voice, and she looks over Clark’s shoulder. I manage to give her a smile, hoping that I don’t look like a fool.

“Hi. Can I come in?” I ask, feeling stupid for being here.
