“It’s from Eric.”

I groan when I hear his name. “I thought I blocked him.”

“Given how many messages there are and…” Clark almost drops my phone when it starts ringing in his hand. “I’m guessing it’s Eric or Anna. It’s the same number.”

I go back to my sandwich. “Just block it. I don’t want to deal with that.”

If Eric is wanting to get back together with me in some way, I will snap and say things I will not even regret after. Also, remembering their voices is putting me off my food, and I want to have my lunch.

Clark taps a few buttons on the phone and tosses it back onto the cushion.

“Sometimes, I wonder how you ended up dating that fucking idiot for so long,” he comments as he joins me at the table again, settling down with a heavy sigh. “He’s not exactly the type of guy you would call amazing, and he’s weak to think he can cheat and still have his old girlfriend as well. Either that, or he’s a narcissist.”

“I’m beginning to think that,” I sigh. I finish my sandwich, managing to swallow it down. “He’s a coward.”

“And far too good for you.”

“I’m glad you think so, too.”

Clark chuckles and takes a bite out of his sandwich. “At least you haven’t lost some of that fire in you. I was beginning to get worried.”

I manage a smile and pick up my soda can. “Thank you for staying home with me, Clark. I appreciate you looking after me.”

“I care about you, Megs. And you’re my sister. Of course I’m going to look after you.” Clark smiles at me and squeezes my hand. “Whatever you need, I’m here.”

“I definitely need that now.”

Clark takes a swig of his soda and sits back. “So, you’ve got a few hours before you have to see Mr. Joel Evans again. What do you think you’re going to say?”

“I… I’m not really sure, honestly. I know what I want to do, but whether it’ll actually work is another matter,” I sip my soda. “After all, Eric is going to be his son-in-law.”

“They won’t have anything to do with you and Joel. They have no business getting involved.”

“That’s easy enough to say…”

“Look, Eric and Anna are gold-digging idiots who are going to regret messing around with the two of you sooner or later. They’ll find that they don’t have it all, and they’ve lost out. Besides, you and Joel are adults. Do you need anyone’s permission? Is it their business what you do?”

“I know…”

“Think about it this way, Megan: what do you want from your life? What do you truly want?”

I ponder the questions for a moment. I thought I knew what I wanted, but now I’m not so sure. I sit back in my chair.

“I want to be happy,” I finally answer, Clark looking at me expectantly. “And I wanted it to be with no drama, but I guess I won’t be able to get away from any of that. It’s going to be practically impossible to have a drama-free life.”

“Especially when people like Anna and Eric are involved,” Clark grunted.

“I’m sure they’ll get bored and leave me alone eventually.”

“I don’t know about that. They seem the type of people who will keep niggling away even after the main event is long finished.”

I can’t help but smile at that. Clark’s description is scarily accurate.

“You know how to put things into words, Clark.”

“What can I say? I’m a wordsmith.” Clark shrugged. “And you know my feelings on Eric before you broke up. I did warn you that he wasn’t all he seemed and that he would break your heart.”

“And I didn’t listen to you.”
