Before I can get to her, Anna has reached Megan and shoves her away as Megan darts to the side. Megan is sent careering into a table, which collapses. She hits her head off one of the chairs and lands on the floor. A scream silences the murmuring, and then everyone including my daughter and ex-wife are staring at Megan on the floor.

Anna and Caitlin flounce out of the room, slamming the doors hard behind them. I have a feeling they’re expecting people to go after them, and, sure enough, Eric runs through the mingling guests to go after them.

“Megan!” I crouch beside her as she starts to sit up. “Are you okay?”

“I… I think so.”

But she’s not looking okay. There is a bad cut on her forehead and it’s already bleeding. Then I see a smaller cut on her hand and another one on her arm.

“Megan, you’re bleeding.”

“Am I? Oh.” She looks at the injuries like she’s stoned. “That’s interesting.”

She must have hit her head hard. I ease her up and onto a chair, fumbling in my pocket for my cell phone.

“Can someone get her some water? And someone wait out the front for an ambulance.”

My heart is racing as I dial, Megan leaning against me with her eyes half-closed. This isn't how I expected the evening to go. It’s normally the wedding guests who end up in the emergency room, not the wedding planner.

“Oh, God!” Natalie appears beside me, crouching down to peer up at Megan. “Is she okay?”

“I don’t know. She caught her head pretty hard on the way down.”

“These areheavychairs. I’m not surprised,” Natalie frowns at me. “What was Anna thinking? And was that about Eric cheating just now true?”

“Megan and Clara just caught him.”

“And if we’re to believe Clara, she and Eric were cheating on Megan?”

I nod grimly. I thought Eric was an idiot, but this just confirms it. He has completely lost his mind thinking that this is acceptable.

He’s going to get more than a talking to when he’s finally cornered. I know I’ll be at the front of that line of people. After I’ve dealt with my daughter for what she did to Megan.

She’s not going to get off lightly after hurting the woman I love.

Chapter 16

Megan

I’vehitmyheadbefore, but nothing compares to the pain I felt when I collided with that table. In fact, everything hurts. I can feel the stitches in my forehead and my hand and arm are throbbing, as do my hips.

Joel says that I cut myself on the crockery that broke when the table collapsed. I had some glass in my palm. Somehow, I managed to get cut by a broken plate through my dress, gouging my hip. Thankfully, that hadn’t needed stitches, but the forehead…

I have never had stitches before, and I don’t ever want them again. It feels like it’s tugging at my skin, which makes my injury pulsate even more. Or that may be because my head feels like it’s pulsating. The doctor had put a sticky bandage thing on my forehead and some painkillers, but it doesn’t seem to be helping.

“Here,” Natalie presses a plastic cup into my hand. “Drink this. You need to keep yourself hydrated.”

I want to argue, but my mouth is too dry. I take a sip, only to see Natalie giving me a look that says that isn't enough. So I finish off the cup, coughing as the cold water hits the back of my throat.

“There.” Natalie takes the cup from me and puts it on the table. “That’s better, isn’t it?”

“Of course it fucking isn’t!” I manage to snap at her. “I’m sitting in a hospital bed stitched up and in pain.”

“At least you haven’t lost your fire,” Natalie smooths the skirt over her knees. “That’s something.”

I don’t know what to say to that. I’m in shock that this happened, but I’m also very angry. Anna had pushed me when it was unnecessary, and now I’m in hospital. All I want to do is go home and get away from this mess.

Actually, what I want first is to see Joel. He was here a short while ago but he left to make some phone calls. He’s probably outside with his cell phone glued to his ear as he gets everything sorted. That is what Joel is like; he’s good at getting things sorted out.
