Amanda moves closer as I bring it over to the table.

“That’s what you found in the woods?” Sean asks.

“This is it,” I tell him, putting it down and opening it up. “The book of shadows has a magical lock on it. None of the basic spells I tried worked to open it.”

I take the book out. It’s still locked tight.

I pass it to Sean, and he turns it over in his hands.

“Is this normal?” he asks Amanda, passing it to her.

She takes it and nods. “It’s not a spell that I know, but most witches do lock their personal spell books. They’re highly personal, and it’s a traditional practice to write your name inside so it could be used to identify her if we can get it open.”

She passes it back to me and crosses her arms. “It feels weird that we’re riffling through a woman’s bag.”

“It’s only because we need to know who she is,” I remind her.

“It’s a little invasive,” Sean agrees with Amanda. “But we do need to know. Amanda, maybe you should take things out and look for some form of ID that doesn’t require unpicking a magical lock. We’ll stand by the couch.”

As usual, Sean manages to find a solution that keeps everyone happy.

Amanda nods, and we move over to the couch, facing away to let our mate pick through the bag’s contents to look for a wallet, or a driver’s license.

“Leave out any charms or potions you find in there,” I call back.

Those aren’t personal and they might clue us in to who the witch is.

“Uh, sure,” Amanda says.

It takes her a few minutes to search through the bag.

When she’s finished, she blows out a breath. “Okay, I’m done.”

We turn around a move back to the table.

“No wallet, purse, cash, cards,” she tells us, shrugging.

There’s a bundle of charms on the table next to the spell book now.

“You know what these are?” I ask, falling into magic training mode out of habit.

She nods. “They’re invisibility spells.”

“Invisibility?” Sean asks, glancing at me. “Could these have let her evade your spell?”

I consider it, but I shake my head. “These charms aren’t that strong. They only work like glamor spells, which we’re spelled against, and my spell would have detected her even if she was hiding. She wasn’t out there while we were.”

“Isn’t kind of weird that they’re all invisibility spells?” Parker asks.

“It is,” Amanda agrees. “Glamor spells like these would have no use at the academy. All the witches spell themselves against glamors, so it’s strange that these are all she has.”

“Yeah,” I agree. “I bet she doesn’t go to the academy.”

“These are all charms, too,” Amanda muses. “No potions.”

“Does that mean something?” Sean asks.

“It might,” I tell him. “It could mean she can only work with charms, which probably makes her a quarter witch without a coven. Low level. This is what she’s spelling because it’s the best she can do.”
