Which sort of makes sense, except I don’t know why her book of shadows would be so hard to open if she really is low level. I try another simple unlock spell, but it won’t open.

“Is the lock low level?” Parker asks, raising an eyebrow at me.

“It’s not basic,” I admit. “It must have something inside that’s stronger than those glamor spells.”

Why go to the trouble to lock it, otherwise?

“So, we know nothing.” Sean frowns.

Damn. I hate it when he looks disappointed.

“The book is all we have. I’ll need to figure out how she locked it to find the right spell to break the lock.” That’ll probably take forever, and it’s already late.

“You can do that tomorrow,” Sean tells me. “It’s not going anywhere.”

Amanda nods, and yawns, acting like she’s wiped out.

Parker snuggles up behind her, hugging her close.

She sighs softly. “Night, Parker.”

He lets go. “Night, Amanda.”

She moves around him to push onto her toes and kiss Sean, which doubles as a goodnight to Sean while also showing Parker she would have kissed him if he hadn’t been so forward when it’s not his night.

I smirk at Park. He rolls his eyes at me.

“Tomorrow’s all mine,” he murmurs.

“Well, you can lay awake thinking about that,” I mutter back.

Amanda steps away from Sean and I take her hand.

“Your room, or mine?” I ask.

She smiles. “Yours.”

Chapter seven

Amanda

I’malittlenervousas I step into Dante’s room. I turn at the door and let go of his hand, which sours his expression slightly, as he gives me a vaguely suspicious glance.

“Give me a second, okay?” I ask, knowing he’s already had to wait a couple hours for our date to properly start, and hoping he’s not too impatient to give it just a few minutes longer. “I want to get something ready for you.”

His eyes flash with a hint of excitement before he nods and steps back, allowing me to close the door.

I take in a deep breath before I connect to the magic inside me. I’ve been working on a deep glamor, the kind you can feel and smell and touch, for a while now, in private, with the intention of recreating the moment we woke up together in the woods.

I start with the ground, creating a lush carpet of soft green grass to lay down on. I’m certain the ground was a bit less inviting but that’s the advantage of creation. I can make little improvements and the overall effect will be the same.

The ground covers everything, the bed looking like a raised mound.

I create the trees next, basically using them to cover the walls and give an optical illusion that the forest goes on for miles all around us.

Creating the sky is the hardest part, and that’s why I spent the most time practicing it.

We woke up together to a beautiful sun-soaked morning, and that’s what I recreate now, making sure the light is soft and warm. It’s kind of weird that it’s night, and I’m making an illusion that includes daylight, but when it’s done and I’ve added in the finishing touches, it feels right.
