I move around Amanda, taking her out of his sight but keeping hold of her hand behind me.

The men who work for my father rarely move around alone.

“I’m only here for this,” I tell him, making sure he knows I’m not trying to encroach on my father’s territory.

He has no eyebrows, which I only notice when he flexes the bare skin where an eyebrow should be.

“Is your father aware of this … visit?”

Shit.I’ve been ignoring that part of the deal for so long that I actually forgot it was a stipulation to the deal he gave me when I decided to leave. I’m supposed to send a message when I’m here. A common courtesy move so his men don’t view me as a rogue threat to his empire.

It wouldn’t have taken more than two seconds to send him a text, but it would have cost me a lot more than ignoring that part of the deal.

I know my father. He would have used the opportunity to poke his nose into my life, and the less he knows about that, the better. If he knew how many times I’d been back here without telling him, he’d be pissed.

I didn’t think he’d ever find out. It’s not as if I come out here to hang around with the kind of people he deals with. I don’t exactly come out here to socialize with ex-friends. I come to remember Mom, to visit her grave and to try and find the strength to talk to him.

I stare back at Orion, and he realizes I’m not going to answer him.

That tactic used to make him piss off back when he was trying to convince me to join my dad’s business. Apparently, it doesn’t work anymore.

He simply turns his attention on Amanda, who’s leaning her head against my arm.

The smile that appears on his face is smug enough to make my jaw clench.

He looks back at me carefully. “I smell a mated pair.”

I roll my eyes at him, forcing my wolf to stay down. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He gives her another glance, and his smile somehow becomes more infuriating.

“Such a pretty little thing, but I wonder what your father would make of his son shacking up with a witch?”

“Shacking up?” Amanda sputters, letting out a loud burst of laughter that surprises us both.

She raises her eyebrows at Orion as she moves to my side, arms folded in front of her. “This guy is my date for the night. He’s nothing more than that.”

Holy shit, she sounds like she means it.

Ouch. That actually kind of stings.

Orion looks at me and laughs. “She’s too good for you, I fucking knew it.”

He gives her another glance over while she stares at him as if she’s daring him to try it.

Shaking his head, he seems to decide she’s not worth the trouble, which is lucky for him.

If he’d actually hit on her, I would have had to knock him out.

“Later, Park,” he says, as he walks away. “Don’t forget to tell your dad you’re in town.” He moves away, heading over to a group of meat-headed looking Betas who are standing near the bar.

I look at Amanda and blow out a breath. “That could have gotten dicey.”

“You’re lucky I’m good at reading situations,” she tells me.

“So, you’re not just mine for the night?” I ask, seriously needing to hear it after that little performance.

She smiles. “You know I’m yours forever.”
