His expression is pensive. He’s already taken the bag out of my hands, after putting the book back inside. He closes it back up and keeps it in his hand.

My stomach starts to churn as I wait for him to reply to my question.

He shakes his head. “I’m sorry, Amanda, but we need to know who she is, and this is our best chance to find out.”

Oh, Goddess. We’re taking this witch’s things.

“But if her stuff is gone when she comes back, she’ll come looking for it,” I protest.

His lips set in a line, and I realize he isn’t taking it because he thinks she’s dangerous.

“I seriously doubt she’ll come looking for this.”

“You think something happened to her?”

“If something did, it would be smart to figure it out before we spend more time out here.”

He doesn’t think the witch is a threat, then. That news really doesn’t settle my nerves. It means there might be something worse stalking these woods. Something that made a witch disappear.

No witch in her right mind would leave her book of shadows laying around in the woods for strangers to find. Maybe this one left it so someone would know what happened to her.

“Let’s go home,” he says, swinging the bag over his shoulder and holding his hand out to me.

I take his hand and let his calming touch help ease my unsettled nerves.

We don’t know what happened to the witch the bag belongs to, but if there’s something out here that can make a witch disappear, we’re going to have to figure out what the hell it is.

Chapter four

Sean

OutofallofAmanda’s favorite pastimes, it’s the midnight runs she shares with Dante that make me anxious beyond belief. My mate is a homebody at heart. She loves to spend date nights here in the apartment, and if she does want to go out it’s usually to someplace close by, like the fair or the mall.

The woods outside of Wolf Creek are much farther away, and they’re not exactly on private land.

I know Dante’s wolf needs the time to run more than most, considering he had his wolf magically bound for years, and Amanda enjoys having that time with him, but the night they spend out there every week is the lowest point for me.

Ever since those Dark Arts witches invited a demon to possess me, I’ve struggled with letting my mate spend time away from me. Every single second that she’s out of my sight is torture.

I know it’s irrational, up to a point. Beyond that point, my worst nightmare is losing her.

I’ve never been the kind of Alpha who dictates what his pack gets to do, but I’m starting to wonder if that could be the biggest mistake I’ve ever made.

“Don’t be an asshole,” I murmur out loud as I flip the page on the Classic Cars magazine I’ve been trying to read since they’ve been gone.

It would be a dick move to tell them they can’t go on any more midnight runs.

Tightening my grip won’t keep them close.

Dante only started to trust me because I’m not the kind of Alpha who makes demands without a solid damned reason. Amanda trusts me because she sees who I am.

I can’t let what happened change me.

“You know you’re talking to yourself,” Parker tells me as he comes out of his bedroom.

He’s not dressed in his usual black ensemble, which I’m still getting used to.

The pale blue shirt and cream cargo pants make him look kind of preppy.
