“It’s been too long,” her mom tells her.

“I know. I’m sorry. School is taking some getting used to.”

I clear my throat loudly. It’s probably rude, but I don’t really care.

My mate is missing. Nothing is more important than getting her back.

“Oh, who are your friends, dear?” The older woman gives us an uncertain look.

“They’re Amanda’s mates, Mom. Two of her mates, anyway.”

“Oh!” she brightens up. “Then you’re welcome, anytime.”

“Thanks, but we really just came to talk with your son.”

I try, but I can’t keep the edge out of my voice.

“Oh, goodness. I hope he hasn’t been harassing that sweet girl.”

“Has he mentioned her?” Jillian asks.

“He doesn’t really talk to me anymore.” She shrugs.

“Is he home?” I ask, feeling ready to wring the life out of his useless body.

“I think he’s sleeping,” she admits. “He’s been doing that a lot lately.”

“Don’t worry,” I tell her. “I’ll go wake him.”

Dante jumps over the banister and darts up the stairs ahead of me.

I race after him, ignoring the remainder of Jillian’s conversation with her mother.

My adrenaline is high as I get to the room where Jake is laying on the bed, unconscious.

He’s moaning lightly in his sleep when Dante gets to his side.

The Omega holds his hand up to stop me from coming any closer.

“What?” I whisper, pissed off that he’s preventing me from grabbing and twisting this asshole’s nutsack hard enough to do some damage and force him to wake up screaming.

“I was checking for magic. I can’t sense any. You can wake him.”

Right.I need to remember magic is involved in this.

I yank the covers away from Jake’s sleeping form, and I move in close, ready to torture him awake.

He sits up, gasping before I get the chance to touch him.

His wide eyes stare at me and I grab him by the throat, smacking his head back against the wooden headboard.

“What the fuck did you do with Amanda?” I growl at him.

“Amanda?” he asks, his voice strained.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

He lets out a strangled gasp. “I … I don’t …”
