When I laughed at that, he wasn’t impressed.

“You want to trade me?” I arched a brow. “All right. Give it a go. I dare you.”

“Let’s not get hasty.” Bart stepped in.

“Try.” I told the idiot. “Do you think other players want to come to Montana to play hockey? You think they’re knocking down the Rebels’ door?”

“You came here.” The man countered.

“Yes. Because it was convenient for me.” I replied. “I didn’t want to uproot my daughter and drag her to another state or wherever else. I didn’t do it for this team. The Rebels is a starter team for players. And once they have their foot in the league, they find another pro team and move on.”

“He’s right.” Bart sighed. “

“Kokou,” I said, standing up. “I don’t have to sit here and take this.”

“Why do you want to stay on a team that doesn’t want you?” The man barked.

“This is my daughter’s home.” I told him. “At this point, I don’t give a fuck about you and what you want. I don’t even care if you like me. But if you mess with my daughter’s stability, I’ll crush you.”

“Come on, Daniel.” Bart pleaded.

“Would you grow a backbone?” I snapped. “You own the team!”

“This isn’t easy for any of us.” Bart pushed.

“Was I supposed to make this easy on you?” I demanded. “That’s news to me. Even so, I have zero interest in making anything easy for you. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.”

When no answer came, I took Kokou’s hand and led her from the room. Out in the hall, I released her but kept walking, her footsteps soft beside me.

I wanted to walk back into that room and start punching people in the throat. They were willing to throw me under the bus rather than admit they didn’t back me up when I needed it. They wanted to sacrifice me at the alter of the hockey fanatics and they didn’t seem to feel not even a little bit bad about it.

Instead of driving, I handed the keys to Kokou but I kept my eyes on the vehicle she’d pointed out to be following us. True to form, the moment we pulled from the private parking lot, it pulled into traffic behind us.

“I’m not in the mood for this right now.” I grunted. “Can we lose them now?”

“Um.” She glanced over at me. “Sure.”

Abeke “Kokou” Bolande

Strange,we were trying to find information on a teacher, and no one would answer any of our questions. It was almost as if some of them were afraid, and the others were just assholes. At one point, I knew there was a man following us but when I circled back around, he was gone.

I knew I wasn’t seeing things.

He was there.

When we came up empty with information, I called Swede.

“Seriously?” He asked. “It’s a teacher. What in the hell could they be hiding?”

“I don’t know. I was hoping you could find me something.”

“Hang on a sec.” Swede spoke, his voice deep and echoing through the vehicle on speaker.

Daniel didn’t speak. He merely turned his attention out the window, staring toward an ice-cream place just across the way. I kept my eyes darting around, keeping an eye on anyone who could pull into the parking lot, learning where the exits are and keeping track of the vehicles there.

“Okay, her name is Sherine Cross.” Swede reported. “She’s been at the school for fifteen years.”

“How is her record?”
