“Clean.” Swede replied. “No disciplinary actions—parents voted her the best teacher three years running. She’s the teacher every parent wants for their kid. According to this, she signed an extension to her contract three weeks ago.”

“That’s suspicious.” Daniel finally spoke. “Why sign a contract then just leave?”

I nodded. “What about her bank account? Any padding?”

“Nope.” Swede replied. “She makes enough to pay her bills, have a small saving account. She’s your typical middle class, single woman.”

“What about her replacement?” Daniel asked.

“All I have is her name—Anna Lowe. She’s a brand-new teacher.” Swede told us. “New graduate which is weird. You replace such a seasoned teacher with one with no experience.”

“That’s weird.” I muttered.

“I’ll keep digging on Anna.” Swede promised. “I’ve sent you Sherine’s address. You going to check it out?”

“On my way now.” I admitted.

“Need back up?”

“I’m good.” I told him. “If anything, I’ll holler.”

“All right, Goddess. Be careful.”

With Swede gone, Daniel shook his head, frowned and turned his attention out the window again.

“What’s the matter?” I asked him.

“Nothing.”

“Daniel, you’re lying.”

“He knows I’m with you, right?” Daniel asked.

“Of course, he knows.” I told him. “You were talking to him.”

“Then why did he ask if you need back up?”

I arched a brow then realized what was happening. “He meant nothing by it, Daniel. It’s a habit. The truth is Montana and his boys, they don’t think anyone can protect their people like they can. It’s not a commentary on you.”

He scoffed.

“I know we’re on a job right now.” I leaned close to him. “How about some ice-cream.”

“I’m not a child.” He told me, turning his head.

Face-to-face, his hot breath bathed my face.

I didn’t ease away.

“Gimme a break. Ice-cream makes everything better.”

He stared into my eyes, something flashing through his that I didn’t recognize, but I liked. I was never a woman who was addicted or attracted to a man’s eyes, but I was obsessed with knowing what colour those eyes changed to before he devoured his woman.

“What flavour do you like?” I pushed. “My treat.”

Daniel licked his lips. “Chocolate.”

My breath caught in my throat and before I did something stupid, I scrambled from the car and hurried into the ice-cream parlour.
