“Listen, when something is fake, we go into it without a second thought.” Charlie explained. “When it’s real—we kinda know. Deep down, we know. And it scares the shit out of us. Then when that thing evolves into something amazing, we know that we can’t ever take it for granted.”

I nodded—understanding perfectly what he meant.

“But there’s something else.”

“What is it?”

“Seema is capable of some dark things.” I exhaled. “I watched her take out a man twice her size then tortured another.”

Charlie scoffed. “She’s not dangerous to you or your son. If she chooses you and anyone messes with Dillon, you know you’re going to have to get a good lawyer on retainer, right?”

I arched a brow.

“Because I have a feeling if she lets herself fall for Dillon, she will ruin more than someone’s life if they fuck with him.”

“And I want that for my son.” I smiled. “I want all the good people loving and protecting him.”

Charlie sighed and picked up his tablet.

“Don’t worry about it,” Charlie said. “Even if you and her don’t work out, I think Dillon would still be able to run to her if he’s in trouble. She’s ARMY, and loyalty is engrained in their blood.”

I nodded.

We got through our meeting then decided on a late lunch.

I kept looking back—a habit after the incidents of being followed before. Each time a vehicle got too close, my heart would stop. That was the kind of fear I knew they wanted me to have.

I couldn’t let them win. Nothing I’d ever done in my life made me deserve any of this.

One of Charlie’s friends met us at lunch.

It wasn’t a planned thing, but it seemed Charlie knew everyone. I knew Jackson Price to be a very good Labour Law lawyer and he’d always been there for Charlie.

We shook hands after he agreed to join us.

More than halfway into the lunch, Charlie got a mischievous look on his face. I groaned and braced myself.

“Say, JP, you’re single, right?” Charlie asked.

“We’ve had this conversation, Charlie.” Jackson smirked over the rim of his drinking glass. “You don’t play for my team.”

Charlie blushed. “And too bad for you. But I’m not asking for me. Carter and I have this friend—he’s very nice. I mean, you might not want to ask now, because he’s just coming out of a relationship.”

Jackson looked over at me.

“His name is Levi—and his ex, a piece of work, let me tell you.”

“I might be interested.” Jackson shrugged. “I mean, it’s not like I’ve had much time to go out and meet something. I’m not getting any younger and I would like to settle down, maybe have a few little Jacksons.”

We laughed.

Yes, Charlie made a good call bringing Levi up to Jackson.

By the time I made it home, I was exhausted. The car outside my place told me that Hermes, one of Tex’s friends was there.

I waved at him and made my way inside to find Seema teaching my son self-defense.

Without letting them know I was there, I leaned against the doorframe and watched.
