“Well, shit.” Wolf grumbled. “That was definitely not on my bingo card.”

When horrible the insect basically, lifted her from the seat then tossed her back against it, I reached for the door handle.

Wolf grabbed my arm.

“Wait.” He barked. “We have to thread lightly.”

“He’s going to kill her.” I snapped.

“Killing her will be bad for business.” Wolf explained. “You fucked up a few of his men, one is missing—that one you almost drowned, well he’s off-grid and she owns him money. He might kill her after she pays up, but not before.”

Though I stayed, I was still a little uneasy.

“I don’t understand you.” Wolf spoke as we settled in again. “You were willing to blow our cover to help her—for Carter?”

“This has nothing to do with Carter.” I replied. “She’s Dillon’s mother. He may not like her now, but one day he might want to get to know her. That won’t happen if she’s dead.”

“That’s very Joan of Arc of you.”

“Don’t get me wrong—I want to snap her neck—” I held my breath, mentally counted to ten then exhaled. “But I have to rise above that.”

“Sometimes you need to go to the gutter.” Wolf grunted.

I said nothing.

Both men sat across from Audrey.

She looked like a lamb being led to the slaughter. I removed my gun from where it was sitting in the back holster, and set it between my thighs on the seat.

The plan was always to give the mark time to look around and when they were comfortable, make our move.

“Let’s do this.” Wolf told me after a couple of minutes.

Putting my gun away, Wolf and I took that moment to sneak across and sat in the booth behind theirs. The waitress came to take our order and we did place one just to get her to go away.

“What about the boy?” The head of the gang was asking.

“What about him?” Audrey demanded. “Like I said, all I want out of this is the money. It would have been easier to get Carter to pay if we could get our hands on the kid. He’d do anything for him.”

“You’re cold blooded.” Rupert pointed out.

“Call it what you want.” Audrey responded. “Your idiot men fucked up and now the kid is protected. How are you going to get to him now?”

Rupert sighed.

“We’ll find a way,” he said. “Just make sure you have our money.”

“I have your damn money.” Audrey promised. “But I might as well find someone else. How many chances do you need to get one man?”

Silence.

“Try the kid again.” Audrey instructed. “If not go after the other one.”

I sent a text to Carter to send Charlie to pick up Eli.

“The other one?” Rupert asked.

“Yeah—the one kid Dillon doesn’t go anywhere without.” She groaned. “If I didn’t know better, I’d say they were gay.”
