“I’m sure you’re looking for these.” I spoke softly. “Or—are you looking for this?”

I produced her knife.

“Now.” I pulled out my gun and aimed it at her. “I never take a knife to a gunfight, Audrey. Have a seat.”

“Who are you?”

I smiled.

“You know who I am.” I tilted my head. “Please don’t start this friendship out with lies.”

“What are you going to do? Kill me?”

I scoffed.

“Kill you?” I shook my head. “No, if I was going to kill you, you’d already be dead. The fun part for me is, you wouldn’t have seen it coming. But for some strange reason, Carter doesn’t want you dead.”

Her eyes lit up.

I felt sick.

“I’m here to give you the chance you never gave Carter or Dillon.” I explained. “I’m going get my friends to help me save your life.”

“I’m not in any danger.”

“No?” I leaned forward. “You owe Selvin and his Tides a lot of money, Audrey. And they’re at the point where they’re tired of waiting. When sharks get tired of waiting, they attack and if I wasn’t here, you’d learn firsthand what it feels like to have your shit rocked.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Oh sweetheart. Do you really think here is where I want to be right now?” I demanded. “I have better things to do than trying to save your life. You see, you broke Dillon’s heart, so I don’t you.”

“Don’t talk about my son.”

“If it was up to me, I’d leave you hear to deal with The Tide.” I ignored her outburst. “If you don’t believe me, you can stick your head out into the parking lot and we can play duck, duck goose to see which of his henchmen get you first.”

Pause.

“Fine.” She told me.

“Get dressed.” I growled.

As she kept eyeing me, I looked out the peephole, then pressed my back to the wall beside the door. Audrey dressed and picked up her purse.

“We’re on the move.” I told the others.

“Who are you talking to?” Audrey demanded.

“Quiet!” I barked, leading her out the balcony door.

I was about to head down the fire escape when a shadow drew my attention.

Holding out a hand to stop her, I watched as a man with a gun emerged from the dark and began looking around. Frowning, I used my body to ease her back into the room.

Closing the door carefully, I exhaled and rubbed the back of my neck.

“Guys, exit isn’t safe.” I reported. “One of Selvin’s people is back here. I have no way of taking him out without making noise. Tex, I need another way.”

“Hold on.” Tex grumbled.
