I smacked his shoulder.

But Levi was serious, and also right.

After leaving the club, I rode across town to check on my truck and see if there were any hauls that I could pick up.

There weren’t any, but Tilda agreed to give me a week then put me back on the list.

In all fairness, that was the best she could do. The drivers who’d been there all along had first dibs on what was happening until I started again.

I rolled up to my apartment and immediately recognized the car parked out front at the curb by the front door. Sighing, I pulled in front of it, climbed off and sat on the belly while removing my helmet.

Carter pulled his frame from the front seat of the sleek car, buttoned up his designer blazer and walked over to me. The sunglasses he wore, hid his eyes from me and it was hard to explain how disappointed that made me.

“Can you at least remove your sunglasses?” I hung my head. “I want to see your eyes when we’re talking.”

“You’ve been avoiding me.” Carter replied.

I lifted my head to see he’d removed the shades and was staring at me intently.

“I’m sorry.”

“I don’t want an apology.” He told me. “I want a reason.”

Exhaling, I tore my gaze away from him to gather myself.

“Is this your way of telling me you want out?” Carter asked softly. “I mean, if you do, all you have to do is tell me. It’ll suck but at least I’ll be able to start getting over you and explain it to Dillon and Eli.”

“But you’re angry.”

He shook his head, shoved his fingers into his pockets and stared off toward the street.

“Not angry.” He explained. “Disappointed. Sad. But not angry. We all have choices to make in life, Goddess. You can’t decide on something to make everyone else happy. You have to pick what’s best for you.”

I nodded.

“I get it, being insta-mom to a gay teenager isn’t something on anyone’s bingo card.” He chuckled. “Especially when the birth mother of that teenager is a homicidal maniac. I’m sorry about that, by the way.”

“It’s not on you.”

Looking up into his eyes, I exhaled.

“I’m scared of letting myself really enjoy this—enjoy you.” I admitted after a while of contemplation.

“Tell me why.”

“I was with my ex for a few years.” I explained. “He wouldn’t marry me. Every time I brought it up, he told me he wasn’t ready. The time wasn’t right. He wasn’t sure he can do marriage. Then after I was hurt and came home—he left me for his ex-wife.”

Carter blinked.

“I wasn’t good enough to settle down with.” I nodded. “I was only good enough to help him pass the time while he fought to get his ex back.”

“I think it’s safe to say that will never happen with me.” Carter smiled. “I’m never taking my ex-back—I mean, I didn’t need an incentive to not go there again. But I have one—she’s nuts.”

I hung my head.

Carter used his finger to tip my chin up.

“Goddess, we aren’t near the place where I ask you to marry me.” His voice was soft as he stepped closer. “But you’ve known from the very beginning what my intentions are. It’ll be my pleasure to get to know you—to have you show me off as yours.”
