He chuckles darkly, “You are the only person I will show any kindness to. That will never change until you have my children. It ends there.”

I shake my head, “Will you lie to them too?”

I’m really poking the bear here. He’s already pissed off. But so am I.

He drags his fingers down his face, “Are you always going to be this difficult to protect?”

“Probably,” I say softly, “I don’t need to be protected from the truth, Hunter. I don’t need it and I don’t want it.”

“Fine. You killed him. Happy?”

I nod, “Yes. Why did you want me to think you did it?”

The waitress comes back with our bottle of wine and two glasses and pours it for us. Hunter seems very annoyed at her presence, which I don’t understand.

When she scurries off to go back inside, I pick up my glass and take a sip.

“I thought you might have guilt. He took enough of your life. I didn’t want him to take more from you.”

Taking a deep breath, I relax, “I understand but I have no guilt. None. After what he did to me. To us. He deserved worse than death. I don’t regret it. I don’t wish I could take it back. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. So, stop trying to protect me. I’m fine.”

Glancing around I take a look at the roses. Pinks, whites, yellows, and even purple surround us. It’s breathtaking. Sweet aroma from the flowers fills the air.

“This is beautiful. Thank you.”

He nods, “We’ll eat lunch somewhere else. We’re just having a drink.”

I take another swallow of my wine and set the glass down, “We may as well eat here. We’re already here. Why go somewhere else?”

Hunter glares at me, “Jade, I am trying to be good to you. Treat you right. I don’t like being questioned. We will eat somewhere else because I said we will. End of conversation.”

I glare at him in return, “Oh it’s you again. Welcome back, asshole.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

HUNTER

Mother fucking hell. We have to get out of here. Our waitress, Sarah is going to fuck everything up if I don’t get Jade out of here. The way she keeps looking at me with puppy dog eyes is going to be a dead giveaway. Jade is an intelligent woman. It won’t take her long to connect the dots if she hasn’t already.

After Sarah brings the bill, I toss a few hundred dollars on the table and quickly grab her hand and try to leave. Sarah yells, “Hunter.”

I turn around while screaming ‘FUCK!’ in my head repeatedly.

“It was really good seeing you again, sir.”

Yanking Jade out of there as soon as possible, I take her to the car. It’s like waiting for a fucking bomb to explode. You know it’s rigged. The timer is set. You just wait.

I help her into the passenger seat before walking around to the driver's side and getting in.

“What was that about?” She asks as I put the key in the ignition.

I don’t respond because I’m not really sure what to say to her. I know I did nothing wrong. We weren’t together. As much as I know that I’m also crystal clear how upset she’ll be.

I’m driving down the road in complete silence when I hear her gasp followed by, “Oh my god. You fucked her.”

And there it is. The bomb has exploded leaving her with tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Sassy.”
